House of Earth and Blood Part 1: The Hollow
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 1
Danika Fendyr stops by the antiquities gallery after a rough morning on patrol. She’s Bryce Quinlan‘s best friend and a wolf shifter who looks like she crawled out of a dumpster. The two trade a few jokes before Danika shoves her famous sword into a supply closet and heads downstairs to shower.
Bryce quickly figures out that Danika is cleaning up for a rare meeting with the City Heads. The news is bad. A human rebel named Philip Briggs is getting released on a legal technicality. He once tried to spark a war by bombing a local nightclub, and Danika plans to tell the city leaders exactly what she thinks about it.
Danika never makes it out the door before Bryce’s boss calls. Jesiba Roga is a sharp-tongued enchantress with zero tolerance for people cluttering her shop. She tells Danika to stop leaving gear in the gallery, or Jesiba will turn her into a lizard.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 2
After leaving the gallery, Danika and Bryce steal a few minutes together before splitting up. Jesiba has ordered Bryce to visit Luna’s Temple and find leads on a missing Fae relic stolen during a recent blackout. Bryce hopes solving it might help her career. Danika makes Bryce promise to keep her protective amulet on.
They talk about Philip Briggs. Bryce asks if Danika thinks he’ll go after Danika or the pack once he’s out. Danika admits she has no idea, and that uncertainty settles over them both.
To shake it off, Bryce and Danika stop at the Heart Gate. Danika flashes her badge to skip the tourist line so they can reach the wishing disk. Danika wishes for Ithan to win his upcoming match. When it’s Bryce’s turn, she teases Danika about her disastrous manicure instead. The two share one last laugh before going their separate ways.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 3
Bryce comes home to find the Pack of Devils spread out across her apartment. One look at Connor Holstrom tells her the meeting went badly. Alone with Bryce in the kitchen, Danika confirms that Philip Briggs is being released and admits something else is eating at her. Sabine publicly blamed her for the deaths of two CCU students killed near the temple during the blackout. The murders happened right on Danika’s patrol route, and she can’t shake the fact that she missed it.
Before Bryce can leave for her date, Connor pulls her aside and asks her out. Bryce turns him down flat. She has a strict rule against dating shifters because she finds their possessive behavior exhausting.
As Bryce heads for the door, Danika tells her she loves her. Bryce notices how worn down her friend looks and almost stays. She goes anyway.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 4
Bryce’s dinner at the Pearl and Rose is a disaster. Reid spends the whole evening on his phone and barely looks at her. Bryce ends things, grabs the wine bottle, and walks out.
Outside, Bryce texts Connor and agrees to a pizza date on Saturday. Danika sends annoyed messages about being left out of a nightclub run. Bryce ignores Danika’s messages and heads to the White Raven.
Fury is waiting outside. She sneaks up on Bryce and presses a knife to Bryce’s neck to prove how unaware she’s been. Before they go in, Fury warns Bryce about a new drug called synth and tells her to stay away from it.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 5
Bryce walks home, and the drug fog clears just as she reaches her floor. Her front door is smashed, and the apartment is destroyed. Inside are the bodies of the Pack of Devils. Danika, Connor, and Thorne are dead.
Grabbing a broken table leg, Bryce follows a trail of blood into the night. In a nearby alley, she finds an eyeless creature attacking an angel. Bryce drives it off, but the creature bites her leg, leaving a wound that burns like acid.
The creature flees. Bryce presses her hands against the dying angel’s chest, uses the angel’s phone to call for help, and tells the operator to track the device. She stays with him until help arrives.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 6
Isaiah Tiberian and Hunt Athalar watch Bryce through a window at a secure legion facility. Bryce has been unresponsive for hours since the massacre. Hunt tried to track the killer that night but found nothing. The brutality of the murders doesn’t match anything Hunt has seen from a demon.
Things get worse when Sabine shows up and demands to confront Bryce. Sabine blames Bryce for Danika’s death and accuses her of stealing the family sword. Isaiah and Hunt hold Sabine back until she leaves.
To get Bryce talking, a wraith interrogator named Viktoria plays an audio recording from the night of the attack. Hearing her friend’s final moments breaks something in Bryce. She tears apart the room before collapsing. Hunt is ready to move Bryce when Ruhn Danaan shows up, demands her release, and argues the Fae should have jurisdiction. Ruhn gets into a heated exchange with Hunt and takes Bryce away.
Alone, Isaiah and Hunt reveal they slipped a tracking device into the water Bryce drank. They plan to watch her and wait to see if the killer surfaces again.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 7
A week has passed since the massacre, and Bryce is a ghost of herself. She’s holed up in a hotel with her mother, staring at the walls and shutting everyone out. What finally pulls her back is a voicemail from Ithan banning her from the pack’s funeral services.
Since she isn’t welcome, Bryce slips out before sunrise and crosses the river to the Bone Quarter. She kneels alone in the heavy fog, and something powerful and frightening rises from the mist to meet her.
House of Earth and Blood Part II: The Trench
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 8
Nearly two years have passed, and Bryce is back at the White Raven to close an art sale for Jesiba. Bryce’s client, a wealthy vampyr named Maximus Tertian, gets aggressive and implies that sexual favors are part of the deal. Ruhn shows up after the club owner calls him for backup, and Maximus backs down. Bryce gets her payment.
Away from the crowd, Ruhn warns Bryce that the Autumn King wants her to keep a low profile during the upcoming Asteri Summit. The conversation turns tense when Ruhn brings up the massacre. The memory hits hard, and the glass in Bryce’s hand shatters. Ruhn talks Bryce down.
Bryce heads back to the penthouse she inherited through Danika’s will. It’s beautiful and a daily reminder of everything Bryce lost. Bryce ends the night by letting her pet chimera, Syrinx, out of his crate.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 9
Hunt returns to his quarters after a brutal execution for Micah Domitus. He gets through these assignments by feeling as little as possible. Back at the barracks, Hunt’s soldiers tell him that he and Isaiah have a new investigation in the Old Square the next day.
The work is part of a long-standing debt. Two hundred years ago, Hunt led a rebellion that fell apart at Mount Hermon. After the defeat, Hunt was sold into slavery and passed between owners who all tried to break him. Four years ago, Micah bought Hunt and offered a deal that amounted to a different kind of prison. Hunt must atone for thousands of deaths by working as an assassin and will only earn freedom once he reaches a set kill count. Four years in, he has barely made a dent.
Hunt ends the night in a scalding shower, trying to wash the night off.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 10
Hunt and Isaiah head to Griffin Antiquities on Tuesday morning. Bryce tries to blow them off through the intercom until Hunt mentions a murder investigation.
Inside, Hunt and Isaiah ask about Bryce’s meeting with Maximus Tertian. Bryce confirms she met the vampyr to close an art deal and that he got aggressive before they parted ways. Then Hunt drops the bombshell. The way Tertian died matches exactly how Danika and her pack were killed two years ago. Since those details were never made public, investigators believe it’s the same killer. Philip Briggs might be innocent.
While the two legionaries wait outside, Bryce calls Jesiba right away. Micah is already on his way, and Jesiba orders Bryce to lock down the building and prepare for the Governor’s arrival.
House of Earth and Blood Chapter 11
Micah shows up at the gallery with Hunt and Isaiah. Bryce lets them in and sets up a video call with Jesiba, who’s joining from Pangera. Micah reveals that the latest murder is a forensic match for the massacre two years ago and that there’s another connection between the two crimes, one that even surprises Micah’s own team. Before he gets into the details, Micah makes his real agenda clear. He wants Bryce to lead the investigation and find out who’s actually behind it.
