When the Moon Hatched Chapters 85–Epilogue Summary

This chapter-by-chapter summary of When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker contains spoilers.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 85

Raeve stays with Líri while Agni works to mend the dragon’s wings. The effort is too much, and Agni faints. Raeve helps her up and sends her off to eat and rest while she keeps watch.

Kaan shows up later and tries to get Raeve to open up about Rekk. She admits he once took someone she cared about but says nothing more. Kaan lets the matter drop. He tells her Rekk plans to head back to Gore through Bothaim, and he’ll help her leave once Líri recovers. He’ll keep Rekk in Dhomm as long as he can to give her a head start. Before leaving, he pulls her close and asks her to come back to him one day.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 86

Elluin uses a massive storm as cover and slips away from Kaan. She leaves a note claiming she chose Tyroth because he’s a better man to father her children. The lie makes her sick with guilt. She fears Kaan will never learn the child is his and that she may not live long enough to tell him the truth.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 87

Rekk arrives at the Velvet Snog with his escorts, including a Burn soldier named Terros. He plans to kill Terros and take the dragon later that night, but first he buys him a meal.

After finishing his meal, Rekk sends his escorts away, then goes up to his room to meet a woman sent to wait for him. She drops hints that she might be the legendary Fire Lark. Before Rekk can react, she stabs him in the leg and throws his weapons into the fireplace. The door is trapped with razors. He tries to leave anyway and gets struck in the head, knocked unconscious.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 88

The Other takes control and pushes Raeve’s consciousness aside. She ties Rekk to the bed, tortures him with a red‑hot fire iron, and tells him he’ll feel the same pain he forced on his dragon. She then reveals she can control fire—a fourth elemental power Raeve possesses that even Kaan doesn’t know about—and burns his face so he knows what it feels like to be scalded in the heat.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 89

Veya enters the Arithian palace disguised as a maid named Ayda to search for Elluin’s diary. A servant directs her to the King’s private rooms, where Tyroth mistakes her for the real Ayda and reveals that the maid is pregnant with his child. Suddenly, a message from Kaan arrives on a parchment lark, but Tyroth can’t see the invisible ink and destroys it before leaving.

Alone, Veya finds the diary hidden near the bed frame and reads the final entries, which make everything clear. Elluin knew the baby was Kaan’s and feared a specialist had arrived to confirm the paternity. She also believed she wouldn’t survive the birth.

Veya realizes that, after learning Kyzari is Kaan’s daughter and that Tyroth has been raising her without knowing, the diary changes everything.

When the Moon Hatched Epilogue

Arkyn visits Kyzari in her cell and offers her freedom in exchange for her signature on a blank piece of parchment. She signs it but hides a message within her name. Arkyn notices, adds his own note, and sends the lark to Kaan. Just as it flies off, a small, battered lark lands in Kyzari’s hand. On its underside is the word Nee.
