When the Moon Hatched Chapters 66–84 Summary

This chapter-by-chapter summary of When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker contains spoilers.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 66

Every time Raeve prepares to leave the house and hunt Rekk Zharos, she comes back with supplies instead and spends her time fixing the place up to feel like a real home. While writing in her diary, Raeve reflects on the life she’s started to piece together.

Raeve realizes that Kaan loved a version of her from long ago, that she somehow lost both him and her own identity, and that she even lost a dragon who died protecting her. Raeve knows she needs to leave for good, but she’s not ready yet.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 67

Kaan returns to Dhomm and catches up with Pyrok. He mentions that he left Grihm at the hatching hut to attempt stealing an egg from the Great Silver Sabersythe. Pyrok tells Kaan that Raeve hasn’t left the city. She’s been buying supplies and asking local merchants about the King, which suggests she’s settling in.

After Pyrok leaves, Kaan uses his scope to watch the western shore and finds Raeve picking up shells on the beach. He sees her glance toward the dragon’s hutch and realizes he’s willing to risk his heart for her again, despite the pain of their past.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 68

Elluin attends a Tithe ceremony and watches Kaan lead it from the throne. When their eyes meet, the intensity shakes her. She slips behind a pillar to catch her breath, and she reflects on nearly two phases of hiding on the sidelines of the kingdom. Elluin decides she’s done letting others choose her path and resolves to live on her own terms.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 69

Raeve wakes to dragons roaring in the distance and goes out to find the sky covered in aurora ribbons with dragons spiraling above the city. She recognizes the sight as The Great Flurrt, a celebration for the people of Dhomm.

Drawn to the festivities, Raeve tries to ignore them until she spots a basket on a tree branch holding a mask, a gown, slippers, a note, and Kaan’s málmr. She realizes Kaan is asking her to join and decides to go, treating the night as a final tribute to their shared history before she moves forward with her plan to erase her memories forever.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 70

A parchment lark guides Elluin through a dark tunnel to a home built into a cliff face. Inside, Kaan waits at a table set for two. He tells her the home is a gift and promises to walk away forever if that’s what she wants. Elluin doesn’t hesitate. She stays, and the two finally come together.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 71

Raeve meets up with Pyrok and learns he’ll be her escort for the day. During their conversation, he mentions that he knew her before she lost her memories and offers to tell her what he knows, but she declines. She wants to move on and leave her former self behind.

At the festival, Raeve and Pyrok reach a fork in the path that splits toward three large domes. Pyrok points out that the King is in the one on the right, so Raeve heads for the one on the left to force him to come to her.

At the entrance, a strange and inexplicable unease stops Raeve before she finally forces herself to step inside.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 72

Raeve feels a strange pull toward a restricted area and decides to investigate. She uses Pyrok’s gold to get them past the guards, and inside, they find a private game table surrounded by wealthy players. One of the men mocks Pyrok over unpaid debts.

To Pyrok’s horror, Raeve joins the game. She doesn’t have enough gold for the high stakes, so she offers a personal favor to each player as her buy-in. An octimar binds this promise to her soul through a magical ritual. Pyrok is furious, but Raeve pleads with him silently to stay, and he does. The game begins.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 73

Raeve wins the card game just as Kaan arrives and orders everyone out. During their tense exchange, he explains their relationship ended because she committed herself to another man. He admits he still loves her, but Raeve refuses to accept it.

As the standoff escalates, the two agree to a magical wager through the octimar. If Raeve wins, she wants one last night pretending to be the couple they once were, then she’ll have her memories of Kaan wiped for good. If he wins, she must answer three of his questions honestly.

When Kaan mentions that Raeve suffered a loss, she tries to flee. The octimar restrains her, and Kaan reminds Raeve that the magic binds them to the table until the game ends. She reluctantly returns to her seat.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 74

Raeve wins the game at the last second. Kaan tries to understand why she keeps pushing him away, but she stays silent. His hurt turns into cold anger, and he makes a vulgar comment about how they should spend their night. Raeve ignores the remark and asks him to dance. He stands up and follows her out.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 75

Kaan and Raeve dance, the air between them heavy with unspoken tension. Raeve nearly falls, and Kaan catches her. They share a charged moment before she tries to pull away, but he draws her back.

Two Sabersythes suddenly dive close to the dome, and Kaan moves to shield Raeve from the heat, but she slips into the ice maze. He follows, suspecting she’s hiding something after seeing how she reacted to the dragonflame, which revealed hidden symbols on the walls. He calls out and demands that she come out.

Raeve agrees, but only if Kaan closes his eyes. He does, and Raeve kisses him softly on his face and neck. By the time he reaches for her, she’s gone. She sings to draw him deeper into the maze until he finds her at the top of a tall ice pillar under the moonlight.

There, Raeve climbs onto Kaan and pulls his arms around her. She admits she’s grieving someone she lost and can’t offer more than this moment. Kaan removes his mask and kisses her for real.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 76

Kaan and Elluin spend their nights sharing meals, playing music, and being intimate in their own secret home. He gives her a necklace called a málmr, made from a scale he took from a legendary Sabersythe, because it was the only way he felt he could prove himself worthy of her love. Elluin keeps it close and prays constantly for his safety, terrified of losing him.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 77

Raeve wakes up and tries to slip out, but Kaan catches her. He wants to talk about her past and warns he’ll chase her forever if she runs. Then he tells her that her return affects other people. Raeve isn’t ready for that conversation, so she pulls him into something more intimate to avoid the truth a little longer.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 78

Kaan stops in the middle of their intimacy to demand a concession. He refuses to let Raeve erase him from her memories and forces her to agree to his terms. Afterward, he tells her someone else needs her and that she can’t keep running. Raeve thinks of Nee, a small parchment lark she had grown fond of, and wonders if their meeting was planned. Kaan reminds her she has agreed to stay and face whatever comes next.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 79

King Ostern arrives for The Great Flurrt festivities with his sons Cadok and Tyroth. Tyroth corners Elluin in a hallway, but she holds a blade to his throat to make her feelings about him clear.

The feast that follows is miserable. Elluin sits behind a veil and chokes down spicy food she doesn’t want. When King Ostern bullies Veya to tears, she tears off her veil and climbs onto the table to grab food she actually likes.

Before the night ends, King Ostern announces that Kaan and Veya will leave with his sons after the celebration. The news catches everyone off guard.

Later, Kaan and Elluin spend the holiday lost in each other, doing their best to ignore what’s coming. The binding ceremony with Tyroth is only thirty cycles away.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 80

Kaan tries once more to start the conversation Raeve has been avoiding, but she resists. He has moved the only Mindweft in the city to a secret location, destroying her plan to erase her memories, and reminds her of a drunken confession that she only runs because she can’t face watching him die.

Raeve retaliates by creating an invisible barrier between herself and Kaan and pleasuring herself while he’s forced to watch. They acknowledge there will be no more attempts at a truce, and she walks out.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 81

The moment King Ostern’s children leave, he has Elluin arrested. Alone with her, he reveals he knows about her relationship with Kaan and calls him too weak to lead. She spits at him and says she’ll only marry a man of her own choosing.

The King threatens Veya, Kaan, and Elluin’s dragon Slátra, then tells her something she hadn’t noticed. Her monthly bleeding is late. He tells her to either go through with the wedding and let Tyroth believe the child is his, or he’ll hunt her and Kaan down. With no way to protect the people she loves, she agrees to his demands.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 82

Raeve wakes from a nightmare in which the Scavenger King tortures her. Kaan hears her talking in her sleep and wants to know what “Fire Lark” means. She refuses to explain and heads to the water to shake off the dream. He follows, pressing for answers.

Three riders interrupt Raeve and Kaan. Two Shade emissaries on Moltenmaws arrive first, followed by Rekk Zharos on a badly wounded Moonplume. The sight of the dragon’s injuries sends her into a rage. She recognizes the marks of torture and reaches for her weapons.

Kaan blocks Raeve. He tells her that killing an official emissary on his land would give his brothers cause for war. She stands down but warns him that she’ll hunt Rekk down once he leaves Kaan’s territory. Kaan accepts the promise and goes to meet the visitors while Raeve stays behind.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 83

Kaan arrives to find Rekk forcing his wounded Moonplume into direct sunlight. He calls Rygun to hover over the landing patch, and the sight of the larger beast gets Rekk off the dragon. Kaan warns him against using the whip again on the creature, then hands the injured dragon off to local handlers.

Rekk claims he’s looking for Princess Kyzari, who was reported missing by Tyroth, her father. Kaan doesn’t believe the story but follows protocol. He tells Rekk the princess has never been there and has him put in iron cuffs before allowing any search. He warns that Rekk will be watched every second he stays in the kingdom.

When the Moon Hatched Chapter 84

Raeve feels restless and goes to find the injured dragon. She scales a steep cliff to reach the high landing area, and as she climbs, a flash of memory about another dragon almost makes her lose her grip. At the top, she finds the Moonplume huddled in the shadows, covered in severe burns.

Moving closer, Raeve speaks to the dragon with a gentleness she rarely shows anyone. She talks about her own scars and the pain they both carry, then places her hand on the creature and vows to protect it from further harm.
