The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 29

Poppy doesn’t let the Queen’s framing go unchallenged. She pushes back on Atlantia’s plan to destroy all Ascended without negotiation, pointing out that the innocent people of Solis are victims too, and that closing borders and training armies for centuries isn’t the same as trying to prevent war. Queen Eloana listens, then tells Poppy the decision has already been made. Atlantia is moving toward war, and the armies are nearly in position. The power to stop it rests with whoever sits on the throne, and she and Valyn no longer believe they can hold that line.

Queen Eloana then tells Poppy she has days, perhaps a week, before Atlantia marches into Solis. She encourages Poppy to leave for Evaemon that day, to see the capital and meet the people before deciding about the Crown. Queen Eloana wants Poppy to love Atlantia before she rules it, not simply inherit it.

Before Poppy can respond, Casteel and King Valyn appear on the path with Vonetta, whose early return from Spessa’s End signals that something has gone wrong. A convoy of Ascended has arrived there and is requesting an audience. The message comes from someone claiming to be Poppy’s brother, Ian Balfour.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 30

Vonetta confirms what Poppy had been dreading. Ian has fully Ascended as a vampry. The news lands harder than expected, even though Poppy knew it was likely. As power surges through her involuntarily, the wolven react, and she begins to glow. Casteel holds her and talks her back from the edge.

Once Poppy is calm, the situation becomes clear. Ian is waiting at Spessa’s End with a message from the Blood Crown, and he’ll only deliver it to his sister. Poppy tells Casteel they have to go immediately. His parents warn it’s almost certainly a trap, but neither of them will be moved. They leave.

Back at the Contous home, the group pulls together quickly. Jasper, Vonetta, and a sizeable wolven escort will make the journey with Poppy, Casteel, and Kieran, with Vonetta refusing to stay behind despite having only just arrived.

While packing, Poppy fills Casteel in on her conversation with his mother. Atlantia’s armies are nearly ready to march, with half the Elders already in agreement, and Casteel confirms his father said the same. Neither Poppy nor Casteel wants war if it can be avoided, and seeing Ian and receiving the Blood Crown’s message firsthand makes the trip unavoidable.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 31

Poppy and Casteel ride into Spessa’s End, where Coulton greets them in the courtyard. Coulton already knows that Poppy is a deity and takes it in stride, which she appreciates.

Casteel pulls Poppy aside and urges her to keep her abilities hidden from Ian and the Blood Crown. The less they know, the better the chances. He also asks if she can bring herself to end Ian’s suffering if her brother is truly beyond saving. Poppy says she’s ready and promises she won’t act recklessly.

Vonetta then arrives with news that the Ascended have come.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 32

Poppy and Casteel walk out to meet Ian with Kieran, Delano, Vonetta, and Nova beside them. Ian steps from the Blood Crown’s carriage, his eyes drained of all color. He delivers the Queen’s summons, requesting a meeting in Oak Ambler within a fortnight. Ian makes it clear the Blood Crown already knows about the armies in the north, and Spessa’s End will be destroyed if they arrive with hostile intent. He also warns of Revenants, creatures unlike anything Atlantia has ever faced. Poppy considers using her dagger on Ian but holds back.

As Poppy and Ian embrace before his departure, Ian lowers his voice and tells her to find Nyktos, since only Nyktos’s guards can bring the Blood Crown down.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 33

The group agrees that Ian is still himself and that his warning about waking Nyktos is genuine. They also realize Alastir has been feeding Atlantia’s military movements to the Blood Crown.

Poppy tells Casteel she wants to take the Crown, not out of obligation but because she believes it’s the only real way to prevent war. Casteel supports her, and she formally commits to becoming Queen. They plan to leave for the capital the next day and then travel to Iliseeum to wake Nyktos.

That night, Poppy has a nightmare about the attack that killed her parents. When she wakes, she remembers something she never held onto before. Someone else had been in the kitchen that night, a figure her mother clearly recognized, dressed in black like the Dark One.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 34

On the road to Evaemon, Unseen and Gyrms ambush the group. Their numbers overwhelm, so Poppy taps into her power and wipes out the entire force at once. Afterward, she tells the group that whoever thought that would stop her from claiming the throne was wrong, and anyone else who tries will meet the same fate.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 35

The group arrives at the palace in Evaemon, where Casteel’s parents and the Council are waiting. Eloana asks about Ian, and Poppy explains that he’s unlike other Ascended, though she isn’t sure yet if that makes things better or worse. Poppy then tells Casteel’s parents she has come to claim the Crown and the kingdom.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 36

Poppy and Casteel face his parents to formally claim the crowns. When Valyn pushes back, Poppy says that everything she’s endured has led to this moment and nothing will stop her now. Casteel’s parents concede.

Lord Gregori steps forward to voice the Council’s concerns. He questions whether transferring power makes sense on the eve of war and whether Poppy, raised by their enemies, can be trusted. Poppy tells him their enemies are the same and asks only for the chance to prove it. Lord Gregori accepts and steps back. No other Elder speaks against her.

The abdication takes place that same day. Poppy and Casteel kneel before Casteel’s parents, who remove their crowns, speak the formal relinquishment, and administer the oaths. Poppy and Casteel both swear to protect their people and govern with fairness and compassion. The crowns are placed on their heads, and the torches in the Temple ignite on their own. Eloana then tells them to rise as Queen and King of Atlantia.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 37

After the coronation, Poppy requests a change to the Atlantian crest so the arrow and sword cross as equals, reflecting how she and Casteel intend to rule together.

Before the Council session, Poppy recognizes a woman from the Red Pearl as Wilhelmina Colyns, known as Miss Willa, who’s now a sitting Council member.

The meeting opens with Lord Ambrose openly expressing his distrust of Poppy and refusing to address her by title. Casteel makes it clear that Ambrose must either show respect or face consequences. Ambrose backs down.

Casteel and Poppy then lay out their plan to reach Oak Ambler ahead of schedule and confront the Blood Crown with an ultimatum. The Council debates but largely agrees. They also announce their intention to travel to Iliseeum and wake Nyktos, believing Nyktos’s guards could force the Blood Crown into compliance. Willa supports the plan but warns them to avoid Dalos, the City of the Gods, because those who enter don’t come back.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 38

Before the public greeting, Willa reveals herself as a Seer and tells Poppy the prophecy has been badly misread. She explains that Poppy is not the great conspirator the Unseen believe her to be. Instead, Poppy is one of two people destined to stand against a force that has awakened and the destruction it intends to bring upon mortals and gods alike. Willa repeats her warning to avoid Dalos.

Poppy and Casteel are then presented to the people of Evaemon as the King of Blood and Ash and the Queen of Flesh and Fire. The crowd erupts, and the celebration lasts long into the evening.

Back in their chambers, Poppy and Casteel ask Kieran to serve as Advisor to the Crown. Kieran accepts, visibly moved. The formal ceremony is postponed to the larger coronation planned after the crisis with the Blood Crown is resolved.

Poppy then realizes that Nyktos’s guards are the draken, creatures capable of taking dragon form, and that enlisting them is what stands between Atlantia and the Blood Crown.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 39

The group descends through the underground tunnels beneath the Temple of Nyktos toward the mountains at the edge of Iliseeum. Before they enter, Poppy sets two ground rules. She’ll lead if they encounter mist, and she’ll hold back from using the eather in case the gods can detect it.

Deeper in, part of the floor gives way beneath Vonetta. Emil catches her, but the section keeps crumbling and threatens to pull him down too. Poppy breaks her own rule and uses the eather to lift Vonetta so Kieran can pull her to safety. It works, though Poppy admits she had no certainty it wouldn’t cause harm.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 40

The group emerges into Iliseeum and passes through the mist without incident.

But suddenly, skeletal soldiers claw their way out of the ground, and when they open their jaws, black smoke pours out in the shape of snakes. Poppy summons the eather and channels it into pale fire that destroys both soldiers and serpents while leaving everyone else untouched.

The group then crests a hill and spots a vast Temple in the valley below. Far beyond it lies Dalos, but they keep their distance, remembering Willa’s warning.

At the Temple steps, Poppy touches what appears to be a stone dragon sculpture. But it isn’t stone. A living draken shakes free of the dust and fixes its eyes on her. Moments later, a man appears between the Temple pillars, and Poppy knows without being told that she’s looking at Nyktos, the King of Gods.

The Crown of Gilded Bones Chapter 41

Nyktos threatens to kill the group, though it’s more of a test than a true threat. When he suggests killing Casteel instead of Poppy, she steps forward to protect him and their friends, refusing to back down. Her defiance earns his respect, and he stands down. Nyktos then allows Poppy to enter the Temple alone but warns that anyone else who enters will die.

Inside, Nyktos admits he’s been expecting Poppy. He explains the blood treaty that bars gods from entering the mortal realm without losing their strength, which is why they never intervened against the Ascended. He reveals that he’s a Primal, one of the original creator gods who existed before all others. Nyktos tells Poppy that she carries the same ancient blood, making her far more powerful than anyone had realized.

When Poppy asks for his guards to fight the Revenants, Nyktos’s demeanor changes. He calls the Revenants a corruption of the natural order, something that shouldn’t exist, but turns her request down entirely. He tells Poppy that the power she’s been searching for has been inside her all along. Then he sends her away.
