Fourth Wing Chapters 19–27 Summary

This chapter-by-chapter summary of Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros contains spoilers.

Chapter 19

Andarna stops time just long enough for Violet to break free from Oren’s grip. Xaden appears and uses his shadows to choke the remaining attackers, then kills Oren. Garrick and Bodhi arrive to clear the bodies. Tairn urges Violet to trust Xaden, so she shows him the hidden dragon scale armor. Xaden checks Violet’s ribs and decides they’re only bruised. They head to the flight field through a hidden passage where Tairn and the other dragons are waiting.

Xaden demands an explanation for the strange magic. Andarna reveals she’s a juvenile dragon and that young feathertails can give their riders a specific power before reaching maturity. Her gift gives Violet the ability to stop time for a few seconds. Violet worries the leadership will execute her for it, since they already killed a student who could read minds. Xaden and Tairn agree that the secret stays between them.

On the walk back, Violet tells Xaden that another student unlocked her door for the attackers and Xaden asks her to name that person.

Chapter 20

Morning roll call confirms Oren and the other intruders are dead. Xaden addresses the group, reports the illegal assault on a rider, and tells the crowd that he killed six attackers. He also reveals that a high-ranking officer helped them by providing a map and unlocking the door, naming Wingleader Amber Mavis as responsible.

Dain is shaken and tries to convince Violet to change her story. He attempts to search Violet’s mind, but she stops him. Violet can’t let him see the memory because it would expose her ability to stop time. The other leaders gather to judge the case while the dragons land on the surrounding walls. Tairn takes a central position to show his support.

Violet asks Tairn to share the memory of the attack with the other dragons, and they pass it on to their riders. The truth becomes clear, and Dain loses his composure. The leaders unanimously find Amber guilty. Amber tries to justify herself by claiming she wanted to remove a weak student, but the court sentences her to death. Her dragon tries to protect her, but Tairn forces it to stand down. Violet tries to beg for mercy, but Tairn reminds her that sparing Oren nearly got her killed. Tairn kills Amber with fire, and her dragon’s cry of pain rings out across the area.

Chapter 21

Violet and Liam head to the library for their morning duties. Jesinia confirms that the Archives have no record of the book of myths Violet requested and nothing on the legendary wyvern either. Violet finds this strange. A library this massive should have something on the subject.

On the walk back, a scroll tumbles off the cart and rolls open. It’s a report about a southern village called Sumerton, where a shipment was stolen and local food stores were emptied during a raid. This puzzles both Violet and Liam since that region is supposed to be a peaceful trade partner. They figure the document was never meant for their eyes.

Liam fills Violet in on the children of the rebels. Over a hundred children of officers who fought against the kingdom were forced into the dragon riders program, separated from their siblings with no say in the matter. Violet also learns that Xaden placed a magical ward on her room that prevents anyone but Violet from entering through the outside door.

At the afternoon meeting, professors announce that winners of the upcoming competition will earn a visit to the active borders, then spend the rest of class on a battle from six hundred years ago. Violet finds it odd that they brush past recent violence to dwell on ancient history.

Chapter 22

Tairn gets angry during squad practice, and his emotions bleed into Violet’s mind. Violet loses focus, and Rhiannon knocks her down. Jack approaches to insult Violet, and she fires back by calling him a coward for fleeing during the Threshing. Xaden and Liam force Jack out before things escalate. Later, Xaden scolds Violet for skipping her protective gear and tells her to use daggers instead of a staff.

That night, Tairn begins sharing his magic with Violet for the first time. The experience is agonizing, like a massive surge of energy rewriting Violet’s body. Once the shock fades, the power settles into a steady hum in her veins. Then Tairn’s attraction to his mate floods through the bond, and Violet can’t separate her own feelings from her dragon’s. Afraid she’ll do something she’ll regret with Liam nearby, Violet leaves.

Violet finds Xaden outside in the snow, dealing with the same struggle. He agrees to teach Violet a mental technique to block out the intrusive feelings. She picks it up faster than Xaden ever did. Even with her mental walls only partially up, they share an intense kiss before Xaden pulls away. He refuses to act on feelings that might only be a side effect of their dragons’ bond. Violet heads back inside, unsure how much of that attraction was actually hers.

Chapter 23

Violet and Rhiannon talk about the kiss with Xaden. Rhiannon also reveals her signet has appeared. She can pull physical objects through the air, a power Violet recognizes as rare.

Before afternoon classes, Dain apologizes to Violet for not trusting her during the incident with Amber and admits he was wrong to push Violet to share her memories. Violet tells Dain that his need to protect her is damaging their friendship, and he has to stop treating her like she’s fragile. Their dynamic begins to shift.

In her first wielding class with Professor Carr, Violet keeps her time-stopping ability secret and tells him her signet hasn’t appeared yet. Over the following weeks, she focuses on basic magical tasks and building mental barriers.

Violet finds out that Jack has been cleared to fight her on the mat. She initially asks Liam to keep this from Xaden, but Violet eventually lets Liam find the wingleader before the match. She wants to face the fight without anyone stepping in.

The fight turns ugly fast. Jack uses illegal moves and lethal strikes, then unleashes his signet to send a painful surge of energy into Violet’s body. As Violet blacks out, she forces a vial of orange extract into Jack’s mouth. Jack suffers a severe allergic reaction and goes down. Violet wakes up in the infirmary with Xaden at her bedside.

Chapter 24

Violet wakes up in the medical bay. Xaden tells her Jack is recovering nearby, and Xaden is frustrated that she kept the fight from him. When Violet brings up their kiss, Xaden calls it a mistake, arguing their permanent military bond makes any romance a professional liability. He then decides to take over Violet’s combat training.

The next day, Violet and Xaden practice in the gym. Xaden stays armed while Violet leaves her weapons at the edge of the mat. He wants Violet to learn to fight through pain because her enemies won’t fight fair. Xaden gives her a new dagger, shorter and lighter than her others, made specifically for Violet’s smaller frame.

Months pass as winter sets in. More students die from losing control of their magical powers. Violet grows frustrated because her signet still hasn’t appeared, and she worries the constant pressure in her back means the magic will eventually consume her.

Before a flight session, Xaden pulls Violet from her usual schedule to prove to Dain that Violet can already move objects with her mind. On the way to the training field, they run into Colonel Aetos and Violet’s mother. General Sorrengail is cold and disappointed that Violet hasn’t manifested a signet. Colonel Aetos mentions that the library has little information on young dragons and that Violet’s father once researched the subject, though the records have disappeared. Violet keeps her father’s secrets to herself.

Xaden then explains they’ll be doing a joint flight, putting Tairn, Sgaeyl, and Andarna in the sky together so the dragons and riders can practice moving as a single unit.

Chapter 25

The final stage of the competition starts without warning. Squad leaders are sent away, and the remaining recruits have three hours to steal something that would give a strategic advantage to a foreign power and present it to the instructors.

Imogen takes charge, and Violet suggests they target the commanding general’s office. The squad waits for nightfall before moving. Liam keeps watch while Nadine unlocks the secured door with her magic. Inside, Violet finds two letters with sensitive information. The first is a plea for help from a southern commander who says the security situation is critical. The second warns of a growing rebellion in another province and suggests the military increase spending there to prevent armed conflict. None of this has appeared in their official briefings.

Violet also finds a large map showing every military base and active battle in the kingdom. The squad cuts it from its frame and takes it. A guard almost catches them, but Emery knocks him out with wind magic. They stash the guard in a nearby room, and Violet gives him a potion to keep him out for the night.

The group reaches the judging hall just before the deadline. Violet presents the map to a stunned crowd and reveals that they took it straight from General Sorrengail’s desk. The room erupts in confusion. Xaden catches Violet’s eye and gives her a subtle nod of respect.

Chapter 26

The winning squad arrives at the Montserrat outpost for their reward trip. Violet is shocked to find her sister Mira stationed there. The sisters reunite, and both notice how much the war has worn on the other.

A few days later, Violet and Rhiannon try to sneak off the base so Rhiannon can visit her nearby village and meet her sister’s new baby. Mira catches them and agrees to come along. The three spend a quiet evening at Rhiannon’s family home.

Violet and Mira talk about the war. Violet admits her friendship with Dain has suffered because he doesn’t respect her growth as a rider. She also suspects the military is hiding the truth about border attacks. Mira confirms that soldiers only get information relevant to their specific duties and mentions seeing a massive group of dragons gathered across the border, though she lacks the clearance to know why.

Mira also reveals she rescued Violet’s favorite folklore book from their childhood home. The sisters discuss venin myths and the nature of magic. Mira admits she now understands why someone might trade their soul for immense power. When they step outside, Xaden is waiting in the dark. His dragon couldn’t be away from Tairn for more than three days.

Chapter 27

During a strategy meeting at the outpost, Xaden reveals he can speak to Violet in her mind. The meeting also makes clear how much friction exists between Dain and Xaden, putting the whole squad on edge. Xaden drives the point home by plunging the room into darkness with his shadow magic.

Mira pulls the group into the hallway to confront Dain, then warns Violet that Xaden might use his influence to hold her back as a way to punish their mother. Xaden counters and points out that he took risks to follow Violet to the outpost, and Violet hasn’t missed any essential training.

The argument cuts short when Tairn warns that gryphon riders are nearby and the magical shields around the base have failed. Mira orders the squad out. Violet wants to stay and fight, but Dain reminds her she’s responsible for the other recruits. Xaden kisses Violet a second time, then drops to the floor so Tairn can grab her and carry her away. As they climb into the sky, Violet watches the attackers descend on the fortress.
