Broken Dove Chapters 53–62 Summary
This chapter-by-chapter summary of Broken Dove by Dani Francis contains spoilers.
Broken Dove Chapter 53
Before the mission, Gray pulls Wren aside to say goodbye. Karra catches them mid‑kiss, then tells Wren, almost grudgingly, that she was wrong about him. She used to think he wasn’t capable of really falling for someone. As Evlynne prepares to fly them out, she admits to Wren that the whole thing feels off.
The group lands at Bramble Base, a nuclear bunker buried in Ward H. While everyone waits for Travis to send the meeting coordinates, Declan gives Wren a tour. She’s surprised to find Poppy there, who talked her way into tagging along with Fiona.
Back in the briefing room, there’s still no word. Teriq is convinced it’s a setup. Declan floats the idea of pulling out. Adrienne wants to give it thirty more minutes, but she doesn’t get the chance. The bunker explodes before she can finish the sentence.
Broken Dove Chapter 54
The bunker shakes from a blast above. The team scrambles for the security feed, but the smoke is too thick to see anything. Teriq spots a second exit through the medical bay. Wren heads there to evacuate civilians, where Poppy is already inside with Fiona.
Fiona tells Wren to get Poppy out. Wren won’t leave without Fiona too. They reach the civilian hatch and start getting people up the ladder, but Silver Block soldiers breach the corridor. Wren gets Poppy moving and fights alongside Mako until the soldiers are down. She finds Fiona collapsed nearby, shot in the gut, a lung filling with blood. Fiona’s last request is for Wren to protect Poppy. Wren promises, and Fiona dies in her arms.
Outside, Poppy is waiting at the carport. Two soldiers show up. One of them, Theo, gets the better of Wren. Before he can finish her off, Poppy stops his heart without touching him. It’s a power Wren has never seen before.
Wren reaches Adrienne telepathically. Teriq has been taken. Declan didn’t make it. They’re supposed to regroup at the airfield, but there’s no plane and no Evlynne.
When Wren gets Evlynne on comms, Evlynne admits she gave up Bramble’s location. She then tries to pin it on Wren, claiming it traces back to Wren telling her to reach out to Fisher’s father.
Broken Dove Chapter 55
Wren reaches Evlynne telepathically. Evlynne tells her that Fisher’s father is Travis Redden. She gave him Bramble’s location in exchange for a promise to protect their son. Wren begs her to reconsider, but Evlynne won’t budge and cuts the connection.
Back at the Dagger, Wren brings Poppy to her quarters. Poppy admits she’s an inflicter, someone able to manipulate nerve endings and stop a person’s heart. She then confesses that she poisoned Wren on the night of the red moon. She meant to dose her mother’s drink so her mother would leave the party early, but she pulled up the wrong plant. Wren doesn’t hold it against her.
In the war room, Kallister has Adrienne recount everything that happened at Bramble. Sixty‑two of roughly two hundred civilians made it out, and Mako is safe. Kallister lays the blame on Adrienne and calls for Order Five, a vote that could disband the Authority altogether.
Broken Dove Chapter 56
At breakfast, Gray explains Order Five to Wren. If it passes, Kallister takes full control of the Uprising. If it fails, a new council gets voted in. The vote is that night, and either way, Adrienne’s expected to lose her position.
Wren talks Gray into confronting Kallister first. She argues Adrienne shouldn’t be blamed for what Evlynne did and lets slip that Fisher is Travis Redden’s son. None of it changes his mind. When Gray urges him to withdraw Order Five, Kallister turns it back on him and asks if he’s really willing to take direction from the daughter of the people who slaughtered his entire family.
Broken Dove Chapter 57
After Kallister exposes that Wren’s parents were the Tin Block Traitors, Gray turns cold and tells her to leave.
Later, Wren tracks down Saint to ask how he plans to vote. He leans toward Kallister but won’t commit. When the vote is called, Wren catches Gray in the hallway and asks him not to let anger drive his decision. He brushes past her.
While the vote is underway, Wren helps Poppy pack to stay with Luisa’s family in the valley.
Order Five passes almost unanimously. Gray delivers the news, then walks out when Wren tries to get him to talk.
That night, Wren follows Kallister to the daggerstone cave, where abilities don’t work. He tells Hawkins he can run missions freely now that Adrienne and the council can’t slow him down. Hawkins cautions that Gray won’t go along with whatever they’re planning.
Broken Dove Chapter 58
Wren overhears Kallister and Hawkins plotting to weaponize corruption against Primes, targeting children first. After Kallister leaves, Wren trails Hawkins up the bluff and confronts him. Hawkins admits he’s a corrupter without hesitation, then pulls a gun on her. She’s heard too much.
Telepathically, Wren reaches out for help. Saint and Tana don’t answer. Mako does, and she tells him to get to the bluff. While she waits, Wren tries to incite Hawkins into dropping the gun. He blocks her, and the attempt leaves her in real pain. He’s stronger than she expected.
When Mako arrives, Hawkins switches targets. He locks Mako in place and forces him toward the edge of the cliff. Wren can’t get into Mako’s mind to pull him free. She lunges for him at the last second. Her hand slips, and he goes over the edge.
Broken Dove Chapter 59
Hawkins is about to shoot Wren when Prince tears into him. She survives because of the ridgehowler. Telepathically, she calls Saint to the bluff and tells him everything. He proposes covering it up as a wolf attack, erasing her from the camera footage, and talking the guards out of remembering her. Saint’s a persuader, able to plant ideas in people’s heads. She goes back to her quarters and waits.
By morning, the base knows Mako’s dead, and Hawkins barely survived. Kallister announces a memorial over the PA. Saint tells Wren that Hawkins is in a regen chamber with twelve hours of treatment ahead.
That night, Gray comes to Wren’s door. He apologizes and tells her he loves her. She says it back but admits part of her heart still belongs to Cross. Gray says he understands and isn’t asking her to forget him. Before she can confess that she nearly got Hawkins killed, both their comms go off. Adrienne has been found guilty of treason and is set to be executed at midnight.
Broken Dove Chapter 60
Before they can act, Wren pulls Gray aside and tells him what she overheard. Kallister has been using Hawkins to corrupt minds in the wards. They agree not to let Kallister know they’re onto him. Then Adrienne reaches out telepathically to Wren, and she and Gray split up. Wren heads for the cells. Gray goes to find Kallister.
When Wren gets there, the cellblock is unguarded. Adrienne is calm for someone about to be executed. She tells Wren she doesn’t want to be saved. She’s done fighting. Wren argues until she catches the smell of heartroot on Adrienne’s breath. The water was drugged. Wren reaches out for Brion, the only healer at the Dagger, but he’s off‑site in the valley. Adrienne lies down and slips away.
Wren calls Gray to tell him Adrienne’s gone and that they need to leave. The moment she hangs up, a tranquilizer dart hits her neck, and everything goes dark.
Broken Dove Chapter 61
Wren wakes up tied inside a hovercraft. Kallister is at the controls. She tries telepathy and then incitement, but neither works. A white daggerstone pendant around his neck blocks her powers completely. As they fly, he admits he’s a precog. He saw the whole night in advance, Mako’s death included, and let it happen. He lands at Valterra Ridge and tells her he brought her there to kill her.
As he raises the gun, a Command helicopter cuts through the dark and distracts him. Wren charges. He gets a shot off, catching her in the arm. He shoves her over the edge of the cliff. She manages to grab a ledge with her good arm and hangs on while Kallister abandons her and flies off.
Bleeding and powerless, Wren clings to the rock face. Then a hand reaches down for her. It’s Cross.
Broken Dove Chapter 62
Cross pulls Wren up and rushes her to the helicopter he stole from base. Once they’re in the air, he tells her why he thought she’d died. He hadn’t been able to feel her telepathic energy signature in months, and as far as he knew, that only happens when someone dies.
Wren and Cross head for an old airfield at Heath’s End, but the fuel tank’s leaking. The engine gives out, and they crash into the ocean.
