Broken Dove Chapters 37–52 Summary

This chapter-by-chapter summary of Broken Dove by Dani Francis contains spoilers.

Broken Dove Chapter 37

Wren pulls back before the kiss and reminds Gray he has a girlfriend. An earthquake hits and kills the mood entirely.

The next morning, Kitty reveals over coffee that she and Jasper are both Mods and that the Faithful have no issue with Mods or Primes. Gray tries once more to talk her into uniting the Faithful camps, but she shuts him down again.

Then Xavier says he wants to stay at the Hollow. Gray resists until Jasper vouches for him, and Xavier offers to work on Kitty about joining the Uprising. Gray agrees.

Before Wren and Gray leave, she and Xavier share a real goodbye without the usual sarcasm.

Broken Dove Chapter 38

Back at the Dagger, Wren picks up a late-night exchange between Cross and Ivy. Ivy shows up at his door and asks if he ever thinks about the two of them. The connection cuts off before Wren can hear more.

The next morning, Wren and Tana go for a trail ride. Wren confesses she almost kissed Gray, and Tana doesn’t let her off easy, telling her a relationship with a Prime—Cross included—won’t work, and it’s time to move on. Tana also shares that she kissed Luisa and is happy, though still cautious after Anson.

On the way back, Wren and Tana run into Evlynne and Fisher. As they leave, Fisher catches Wren off guard by picking up on her thoughts about Cross and asking who he is.

Broken Dove Chapter 39

Wren can’t stop thinking about Fisher. Most Mods don’t manifest until puberty, so if he’s already reading minds, he’ll be seriously powerful. She wonders if Evlynne even knows.

Wren finds Gray in the rec room playing cards with Saint, Mako, and Karra, who’s draped all over him. The jealousy gets the better of her, and she snaps at Karra before walking out. Gray comes to her door to call her out. She apologizes but takes another jab at Karra anyway. When he accuses her of being jealous, she denies it, and he tells her she’s either lying to him or to herself. Neither budges, and he leaves.

An interrogation transcript shows that Colonel Serrano insists she’s loyal to General Redden, but the interrogator asks her why she hid the fact that she’s Aberrant.

Broken Dove Chapter 40

Wren is still working through her mother’s interrogation file with Kallister, but they’re cut off before she finishes it.

That night at a party, Wren dances with Saint, and things heat up between them until she realizes he’s not who she wants. She goes straight to Gray’s quarters and admits she has feelings for him. Gray tells her he broke up with Karra earlier that night.

Broken Dove Chapter 41

Gray admits he has feelings for Wren too, and after some back and forth, they kiss. She pulls back and asks to take things slow. Gray agrees without pushback.

The next morning, Wren accepts that it’s time to move on from Cross, though her feelings for him remain.

Later, in the Temple, Hawkins teaches Wren how to incite people over longer distances, noting that during his own training, he once incited Kallister nearly a mile away, far beyond what she has managed.

Soon after, Gray texts Wren to ask if she’s free that night.

Broken Dove Chapter 42

Gray takes Wren on a hovercraft date over the glowing lagoon, where they watch hundreds of moonfish leap from the water at sunset. Right before he kisses her, she mentions it’s her birthday, and Gray is thrown that she never said anything earlier.

Back in her quarters, a transmission cuts into Wren’s head. Cross is getting a tattoo and tells the artist to make it hurt. She figures he knows what day it is, which is why.

A few days later, Gray tells Wren what the Authority has been debating. They’ve voted to send Adrienne on an emissary mission to Tierra Fe, but the terms aren’t great. She gets only a pilot and one guard, while the Tierrans can bring as many as they want. The Uprising plans to send a sniper and spotter as backup, and Wren pushes to be assigned.

Broken Dove Chapter 43

Wren flies out with Gray and Evlynne to Dey Province to provide covert backup for a meeting between Adrienne and Tierran commander Vásquez. They use a radar jammer to slip past detection, giving them a five‑minute window to land unseen.

On a ridge above the site, Wren and Evlynne set up while Gray stays with the plane. The talks fall apart after seven minutes, but Vásquez pulls Adrienne aside once more and tells her something that triggers an immediate warning that they’ve been compromised.

Wren and Evlynne run back through the jungle, but Wren falls into a pit trap and breaks her leg. Gray finds her and refuses to leave. She incites him to go, and Evlynne gets him back to the plane. Left behind in the pit, Wren blacks out with an armed figure standing over her.

Broken Dove Chapter 44

Wren wakes in a stone cell. Vásquez tells her she won’t be killed, only held until Adrienne has sweated over breaking their parley terms. He then explains Tierra Fe’s religious reasons for staying out of the war. Wren contacts Adrienne telepathically and asks her to keep a transport on standby.

An hour later, a young woman arrives. The security camera has gone dark, and Wren learns she’s Valeria Vásquez, the commander’s daughter and a hidden Modified healer.

Valeria heals Wren’s leg and warns that the Company has long eyed Tierra Fe, and the truce won’t hold. She admits she can’t bring her father to the Uprising’s side but may persuade him to allow their vessels safe passage through Tierran territory. Before leaving, she tells Wren to keep acting injured. Wren calls after her, asking one more favor.

Broken Dove Chapter 45

Gray confronts Wren over using incitement on him without consent and makes her swear never to do it again. After they reconcile, things get physical. Afterward, she reflects that inciting Gray felt different from when she incited Jayde to save herself, which left her feeling like a monster. This time, despite the guilt, it doesn’t, because it was to protect him. Gray tells her she’s not a monster and asks her to stay.

The next morning, Wren runs into Karra outside Gray’s quarters. Karra’s unbothered by them but warns that Gray isn’t built for a real emotional connection and Wren will want more than he can give.

Later, Wren finds Evlynne crying on the Ledge. Evlynne has suspected Fisher is unusually powerful, and the night before, she discovered his bloodmark on the sole of his foot.

Broken Dove Chapter 46

Wren and Evlynne talk through the Fisher situation. Evlynne fears that reporting his bloodmark to the Authority means he’ll be pulled into training and turned into an asset. Wren suggests sending him to live with his father, but Evlynne shuts it down since the man is a Prime who doesn’t know Fisher exists. Evlynne asks Wren to keep it quiet, and she agrees.

About a week later, Wren goes to a bonfire for Mako’s birthday and surprises him with a gold chocolate bar smuggled out of Tierra Fe.

Later, someone returns Wren’s bottle of grange. She finishes it, notices an unusually sweet aftertaste, and almost immediately feels breathless, dizzy, and like her chest is closing in. Before she blacks out, she chokes out the word heartroot, the same poison she remembers from years ago with Jim.

Broken Dove Chapter 47

Wren wakes up in the medical bay. Gray tells her that her heart stopped for four minutes before Fiona restarted it. He runs an off‑books toxicology test that confirms heartroot poisoning. Wren and Gray agree to keep it from the Authority and let whoever did it believe they succeeded, hoping the person will try again. Gray wipes the results.

When Fiona checks on Wren, Gray claims the bloodwork was clean, and she backs him up with a story about overdoing stims.

An interrogation transcript shows Captain Quinn asking Colonel Marina Serrano about the death of a young girl named Stella. Serrano speaks of her warmly but never once says her name, and Quinn calls her out on it.

Broken Dove Chapter 48

Three months pass with no leads on who poisoned Wren. Adrienne pulls her onto a security detail for a secret meeting in the wards. On the way, they stop so Wren can catch up with Xavier, and during that moment, Jasper projects one of his own memories into her mind. She sees Cross in bed with another woman. The image guts her, but Adrienne calls her away before she can process it.

The meeting takes place at a run‑down railroad station, and Wren covers it from a sniper position outside. As it wraps up, she spots someone slipping past a window inside. The figure is Travis Redden.

Broken Dove Chapter 49

Back at the Dagger, Wren admits to Gray that she’s upset because Cross has moved on. The conversation sours, and he walks off, though he sends Tana to check on her before the night’s over.

The next day, Gray mentions at dinner that Adrienne has put forward a risky mission and Kallister is pushing back. Wren suspects a connection to the railroad station meeting. She gets Kallister alone in a private conversation and tells him she saw Travis Redden in the meeting. He already knew. Then he reveals that the Uprising once worked with Travis to bring down General Redden.

Broken Dove Chapter 50

Kallister explains that Travis approached the Uprising first, proposed taking down his own father, and gave them access to the Command base in exchange for Adrienne using her corruption power on General Redden. The Authority voted unanimously. Kallister doesn’t fully trust Travis but says Adrienne hopes it leads to a real peace deal. He asks Wren to keep it quiet.

That night, Wren brings up Travis with Gray, who clearly already knows. He agrees that Travis is acting out of self‑interest but argues it can still work in their favor. He then flies her to a cliff above a rough ocean and tells her she’s looking at the remains of Valterra Ridge.

Broken Dove Chapter 51

Gray finally tells Wren that Valterra Ridge was his home. He lost his father in the first air strike and his mother and sisters in the attack that followed. She’s gutted, knowing it was her own mother who set that destruction in motion.

After Valterra, Gray says he was sent to live with relatives. His uncle drank and beat him almost daily, then used his own healing ability to erase the evidence. His aunt knew and never stepped in. Gray admits he doesn’t think he’ll ever forgive her for that.

By the end of it, Wren understands why Gray brought her out here. He’s letting her see the part of himself he usually keeps locked away. They head back to the Dagger, and they sleep together for the first time.

Broken Dove Chapter 52

A month goes by. Evlynne confirms to Wren she won’t expose her son’s bloodmark.

One night, Gray tells Wren how split the Authority has become over Adrienne’s agenda for peace talks with Travis Redden. Kallister and Teriq think it’s a mistake. Gray’s more worried about what happens if the rest of the Uprising finds out about their past dealings with Travis. He thinks it’s enough to set off a revolt.

The next morning, Adrienne gathers the field operatives and tells them the Authority has approved opening talks with the Company, and she and Teriq plan to meet with Travis that night. Teriq puts together a small team, and Wren volunteers despite Gray’s obvious objections.
