The Wolf King Chapters 14–27 Summary
This chapter-by-chapter summary of The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman contains spoilers.
The Wolf King Chapter 14
Still flustered from Callum’s teasing, Aurora storms ahead and collides with a servant girl who reacts with immediate hostility. Callum steps in and defuses the situation, then explains that the girl’s family was killed by Sebastian’s army. Callum tells Aurora why he withheld her identity in the courtyard and adds that the Wolf King wants something called the Heart of the Moon and personally owes him a debt, so Callum believes she’ll be safe.
At the stairs, Callum scoops Aurora up and explains that he held off earlier because she needed to appear strong in front of the others. At the top, they encounter a woman named Isla, who greets Callum with barely concealed interest and is visibly put out by Aurora’s presence. Callum instructs Isla to provide Aurora with a dress and boots in the clan colors, and Isla reluctantly complies.
Alone, Aurora catches her reflection and nearly loses her nerve, but she talks herself back to steadiness. Aurora tells Callum she’s ready to meet the king.
The Wolf King Chapter 15
Callum walks Aurora through the castle toward what Aurora assumes is the throne room. Just before they reach the doors, Callum tenses, pushes Aurora against the wall, and tries to lead her back the way they came. They almost make it before a man named Duncan spots them and waves them inside.
Four men sit behind a long table. Aurora mistakes the most imposing one for the Wolf King and curtsies, which draws laughter from everyone except one man sitting apart at the end. Callum demands to know where James is. The man Aurora curtsied to identifies himself as Robert and says James had other business and left Robert in charge. Robert then asks who Aurora is and what they plan to do with her.
The Wolf King Chapter 16
Callum tries to leave with Aurora, but Robert demands to know Aurora’s identity. Callum says Aurora is a kitchen maid. Robert makes a crude suggestion about keeping Aurora for himself, and they nearly break into a fight.
The dark-haired man at the end of the table cuts in and gets Robert to drop it, though he says enough to suggest he already knows who Aurora really is.
Callum takes Aurora to his bedchambers and apologizes. He admits his plan fell apart with the king away, and Aurora is stuck there longer than either of them hoped.
Aurora brings up the dark-haired man, and Callum confirms he likely knows her true identity. Callum warns Aurora that the man, Blake, is dangerous, and he tells her she must accompany him to a feast that night so he can speak with Blake directly.
The Wolf King Chapter 17
Aurora refuses to go to the feast. After two days of travel with no rest, she’s in no state to be seen in public and tells Callum he can speak to Blake on his own. They argue, with Aurora threatening to expose her identity if Callum forces her into the Great Hall, and Callum countering that he could let slip about them sharing a bed the night before.
Eventually, Callum drops the teasing and asks Aurora genuinely to trust him, and that sincerity wins her over. Aurora agrees but only if she can bathe first. Callum points her to the tub already waiting in the room, tells Aurora he’ll be just outside, and leaves her with a warning that feasts among wolves tend to get out of hand.
The Wolf King Chapter 18
Aurora wakes to find the sky already dark. Callum returns the letter opener to her, shows her where to aim if she ever needs to use it, and warns her to stay close during the feast.
On the way down, a young boy playing bagpipes draws a genuine laugh from Aurora for the first time. Inside, the hall is packed with more than a hundred wolves from different clans. Callum leads Aurora to the alphas’ table, where Robert sits at the head. The crowd watches with curiosity and suspicion, but Robert allows their arrival to pass without incident.
When Aurora asks about Blake, Callum says Blake will turn up and that the last person bold enough to challenge his standing as alpha was never seen again. Shortly after, Blake appears in the doorway, and when his eyes land on Aurora, a slow smile crosses his face.
The Wolf King Chapter 19
Blake makes his way to the table, exchanges a few words with Callum, and says they can talk after the meal. As the feast continues, Aurora notices wolves from at least six clans in the hall and watches as each person approaches Callum with questions about members of their group who haven’t returned.
A couple of hours into the feast, Blake slips out through a side door. Callum and Aurora follow after a few minutes, and Callum pauses to warn Aurora that he’ll have to frame her as his prisoner when speaking to Blake, even though that isn’t how he truly thinks of her.
Inside, Blake sits by the fire. With no third seat available, Callum pulls Aurora onto his lap and keeps his arm around her when she tries to move. Blake watches with amusement and greets them with a remark that shows he already knows who Aurora is.
The Wolf King Chapter 20
Blake confirms he knows who Aurora is and agrees to keep her identity secret. He says he’ll deal with Magnus if the real king hasn’t returned by the time Magnus arrives.
The conversation turns to where Aurora will be kept. Callum wants her close to him, but Blake points out that keeping Aurora in Callum’s room puts the entire trade at risk, given how southern noblemen regard their brides. They argue until Aurora steps in and makes the case herself, telling them she needs her own chambers. Callum gives in but warns Aurora she won’t like what he’s about to ask.
The Wolf King Chapter 21
Blake teases Callum about giving Aurora her own room, then pushes Callum to challenge Rob for the second‑in‑command position, warning that inaction will read as weakness. Callum brushes this off, and the two briefly clash over their different attitudes toward power before Callum leads Aurora to a small room in the castle turret.
Aurora asks whether Blake can handle Magnus, the wolf who threatened her. Callum explains that Blake has leverage over Magnus and is better positioned to manage him without causing political fallout. Callum also notes that Blake had the room prepared in advance, anticipating Callum’s agreement.
Before leaving, Callum tells Aurora that having her own room comes with a condition, though he puts off explaining until morning. Turning it down would mean sleeping in Callum’s room instead.
The Wolf King Chapter 22
Aurora wakes up alone and savors the rare solitude before choosing something simple from the wardrobe Blake had stocked for her.
When Callum arrives, he and Aurora talk by the window. Callum mentions traveling to the Southlands to search for his mother, who vanished one night and was presumed dead. He never believed it, suspecting she had fled his difficult father, and says he never found her.
Callum then brings up his condition for Aurora keeping her own room and hands Aurora a small box, which contains what he calls a necklace but is plainly a collar. He explains it as a wolf tradition in which an alpha’s partner wears one to signal to the pack that she’s spoken for.
The Wolf King Chapter 23
Aurora refuses to wear the collar, and she and Callum argue. Callum insists it’ll protect Aurora as the full moon draws closer, but she finds it degrading. Callum leaves and tells Aurora to think it over.
Fiona arrives with breakfast, revealing that Callum sent it. Aurora opens up about spending her life being treated as a prize rather than a person. Fiona sympathizes but urges Aurora to wear the collar for her safety, adding that it carries a real personal cost for Callum, though she doesn’t explain further.
Aurora has settled into a routine over the past few days until Fiona lets slip that Callum has been holding off on searching for those who escaped with them because he won’t leave while Aurora needs protecting.
The next morning, Aurora puts the collar on. When Callum sees it, he tells her that wearing it publicly comes with certain expectations and that they need to set some ground rules.
The Wolf King Chapter 24
Aurora listens as Callum lays out his ground rules for her wearing the collar in public. Aurora pushes back but agrees when Callum promises the arrangement will go both ways and that he’ll take care of her for as long as she’s there.
Callum goes on to explain that people will likely read the collar as a sign that he and Aurora are mates, a wolf bond in which the Moon Goddess ties two souls together. To keep Aurora safe, they need to let others believe it, which means acting as though Aurora genuinely likes him. Aurora agrees.
Right after, Callum takes Aurora outside the castle walls to sit by the loch, and they talk more openly about their lives. The conversation is cut short when Blake appears, and both men go on alert. Callum picks up the scent of approaching riders and identifies them as Fergus, Magnus, and Ryan, then realizes the blood he smells is coming from Ryan.
The Wolf King Chapter 25
The riders arrive with Ryan badly injured and barely breathing. Callum lifts Ryan and heads toward the castle, but Aurora gets caught in the hostile crowd, and a wolf recognizes her as human. Callum silences everyone with a growl and declares that Aurora is his. The wind reveals the collar, and the crowd backs down.
Callum carries Ryan to the infirmary and tries to slow the bleeding while they wait for Blake, who serves as the healer. Aurora notices that Ryan isn’t healing the way a wolf should and, drawing on the book of experiments she found in her room, works out why. Ryan has been poisoned with wolfsbane.
The Wolf King Chapter 26
Blake confirms that he knows the antidote and administers it to Ryan. He sends Callum out with Becky, telling Callum that Aurora will be more useful in the infirmary. Aurora suggests that Callum use the time to get information from Fergus about what happened.
With Callum gone, Blake walks Aurora through cleaning and stitching Ryan’s wound and explains how wolfsbane works and how the antidote forces the body to fight back. Ryan gradually stabilizes.
When Callum returns, Blake finds a bloody envelope in Ryan’s pocket addressed to Aurora and sealed with Sebastian’s sigil. The note tells Aurora that Ryan was a deliberate betrothal gift and that Sebastian is coming for her.
The Wolf King Chapter 27
After checking on Ryan, Aurora worries that Callum’s people will keep getting hurt because of her and offers to return to Sebastian. Callum shuts the idea down and tells Aurora they’ll find another way.
Walking back to Aurora’s room, Callum notices that she’s sore and offers to massage her muscles. Aurora hesitates but agrees. As he works, Callum talks about his father, a ruthless alpha who ruled through fear and treated everyone around him badly, including Callum’s mother. He admits the collar bothers him because it reminds him of everything his father stood for. Aurora tells Callum she thinks he’s a good man, and she means it.
Then Callum goes very still. His eyes change, pupils blown wide and irises shifting into something animal. Aurora scrambles to the headboard and grabs a letter opener from the nightstand.
