Chapter 62

Banner attacks Odessa. She lands cuts on his thigh and arm, but when Zavier rounds the corner, Banner throws a knife into his gut. Odessa sinks her knives into Banner, killing him.

Zavier tells Evie he loves her before losing consciousness. Odessa can’t save him. She blows the Treow warning whistle and takes Evie away.

Ransom finds them near the barracks and pushes them clear as the crux strikes again. He tells Odessa it’s not safe and asks her to run. He removes his cuff and puts it on her wrist. She understands it’s the map to Allesaria. He tells her to head toward Treow and that if he doesn’t arrive within two days, she’s to take Evie out of Turah and do what needs to be done. He trusts her.

They part with I love yous. Ransom turns to hold off the crux. As Odessa runs, she looks back and sees it lifting him into the sky.

In the dungeon tunnel, Brother Dime is waiting with Freya. He leads them out through the hatch and into the forest.

Chapter 63

Ransom surveys the courtyard in the aftermath. Cathlin is standing over Luella’s covered body. Both Halston and Zavier are alive but fighting for their lives in the infirmary.

Ransom walks to a body lying alone in the center of the courtyard. After Odessa and Evie ran, the crux carried him into the sky. He drove his sword into her chest, and they fell together. He woke at dawn.

The crux left behind not a monster’s corpse but a human woman’s body with red hair. Cathlin confirms she has never seen or heard of this before.

Ransom cuts a lock of the crux’s hair and tucks it into his vest alongside Zavier’s circlet. He orders a soldier to burn the body, then walks toward the gates. When Cathlin asks where he’s going, he tells her he’s going to find his wife.
