Brimstone Prologue
Kingfisher notices a vampire stalking him through the palace. He hunts the creature down and kills it with his god sword. Before the vampire crumbles to ash, it warns Kingfisher that Saeris is in danger and that the entire court is doomed.
Not long after, Carrion Swift pulls Kingfisher to a window. Outside, Saeris’s fox Onyx is sprinting toward the palace with a pack of monsters called feeders chasing him. Carrion and Kingfisher ride out on horseback to help. In the chaos, Carrion gets thrown but manages to grab Onyx. Kingfisher holds his ground against the feeders until Carrion and Onyx are safely back behind the walls.
Once they’re inside, it’s clear Onyx is in bad shape. Saeris assumes Kingfisher will put the fox down to end his suffering and hands Onyx over out of trust. Kingfisher surprises her by using healing magic to mend the wounds instead. The catch is that this magic is a finite resource, and he’s just spent the last of it on Onyx. Kingfisher loses his ability to heal forever. He then tells Saeris he would sacrifice almost anything just to see her happy.
Brimstone Chapter 1: Hell’s Teeth
Saeris prepares for her debut as the new ruler of the Blood Court in a bold black gown that embodies her identity as a Fae‑vampire hybrid. Kingfisher is on edge and nearly kills Carrion over a crude remark. Kingfisher would rather wipe out the vampires entirely, but Saeris convinces him that taking the crown is the only way to break the cycle of violence. He agrees but slips a silver dagger against Saeris’s thigh with his shadow magic so that she isn’t walking in defenseless.
At the Hall of Tears, Saeris stands before the five Lords of Midnight to finalize her claim. Malcolm‘s daughter, one of the lords, insults her and refuses to believe she could have defeated such a powerful king. Saeris tells the assembly that Malcolm’s arrogance was his true downfall and declares herself their new queen.
Brimstone Chapter 2: Hall of Tears
The Lords of Midnight continue to resist. Zovena and Algat argue that Saeris can’t truly lead because she hasn’t fed since her transition, calling her a human puppet for Taladaius. Saeris stops her own heart to prove control over her vampire nature, but the Lords still demand that she feed on a living person to seal her claim.
Ereth offers a human victim, but Saeris refuses. Kingfisher tells her to drink from him instead. When she bites into his wrist, the black ink flowing through him transfers to her skin, and the rush of feeding for the first time overwhelms Saeris with power and pleasure.
Kingfisher pulls Saeris away before things get out of hand. Both are left breathless while the court erupts in cheers. Ereth leads the crowd in a chant to crown her. With blood in her system for the first time, Saeris’s senses come fully alive, and the dark hall appears vibrant and beautiful.
Brimstone Chapter 3: Dose
Kingfisher is still reeling from Saeris’s bite when Ereth moves in for the kill. The vampire lord tries to use a hidden silver needle to assassinate Saeris, but Kingfisher hurls his god sword and cleaves Ereth in two. Taladaius uses forbidden magic to boil the blood of any guard who intervenes. Saeris declares herself queen and issues new laws that protect her allies and forbid the use of the enthralled undead as weapons.
Afterward, Kingfisher meets with Renfis and Lorreth in the war tent. They tease him about how visibly affected he was by Saeris’s bite. The conversation shifts to Foley, an old friend turned vampire, whose knowledge of alchemy is the only way Saeris can master her true power. Before they can plan further, a soldier named Danya bursts in and tells them to come outside.
Brimstone Chapter 4: 114
Eight strange feeders appear at the riverbank, moving with a synchronized precision none of the warriors have ever seen. When Renfis and Kingfisher use magic against them, the creatures absorb it and grow stronger. Kingfisher feels a wave of misery and cold each time they siphon his power. Silver and iron do nothing. Even his god sword screams in pain on contact. Fire is the only thing that works, but the creatures keep fighting through the flames. By the time they’re defeated, one warrior is dead, and both Kingfisher and Danya suffer severe burns.
Back at camp, Kingfisher insists that Te Léna heal Danya first. Kingfisher and Renfis argue over who’s behind the attack. Renfis suspects Taladaius because of how the feeders moved together. Kingfisher counters, pointing out that Taladaius was forced into terrible things under a curse and wouldn’t act this way of his own free will.
Later, the full cost of the attack sets in. One hundred and fourteen warriors are dead. The feeders have been decapitated and tied to a tree, but their headless bodies still strain against the ropes, and the tree itself rots from being so close to them. Lorreth believes these creatures may not even be from their world.
Brimstone Chapter 5: Deadstock
Carrion examines the severed heads and notes two things. The creatures bear sterilization marks found only in Zilvaren, and their round ears prove they were once human. Kingfisher concludes that Madra is deliberately sending people through as feeders to spread the rot across Yvelia. Saeris asks if a quicksilver pool is hidden in the palace, and Taladaius admits there is.
Brimstone Chapter 6: Titles
Saeris and Kingfisher return to Cahlish through the quicksilver pool and walk into a surprise welcome dinner with their friends. Kingfisher declares Saeris the Lady of Cahlish. Carrion brings up a wedding, but Kingfisher dismisses the idea, saying their magical bond is enough. Saeris agrees, but she catches a brief look of disappointment on his face.
Brimstone Chapter 7: Home
After dinner, Kingfisher pulls Saeris aside to explain himself. He wants to marry her, but a Fae wedding requires both partners to exchange their true names. Kingfisher doesn’t know his because his mother died before he turned fourteen and his father was already gone. Saeris isn’t bothered and points out that she doesn’t have a secret name either. She tells Kingfisher she loves him for the first time, and her words clearly mean the world to him.
Kingfisher carries Saeris to his bedroom, and they spend the night together. Their connection feels deeper now that Saeris has transitioned. She even discovers she can silence the room so no one outside can hear them. At some point, Kingfisher admits she has brought him back to life after centuries of misery. They eventually rest, exhausted but deeply happy.
Brimstone Chapter 8: Make Your Peace
Kingfisher wakes up alone and sees that Saeris has chosen her old fighting leathers instead of the dress he picked out. He finds her independence charming and feels more in love with her than ever. Over breakfast, Renfis teases him until Kingfisher admits he’s in love. The conversation then shifts to Taladaius. Renfis struggles to forgive Taladaius for joining the vampires, but Kingfisher argues that some choices are never simple.
Everything stops when they reach the hill overlooking Irrín. The encampment is gone, reduced to a massive crater of ash, with thousands of warriors missing. The only thing left standing is the old oak tree where they tied up the feeders. The creatures’ bodies have fused with the wood, and thick black vines coil around the trunk. Huge roots tear through the ground, leaking a dark fluid that rots the soil.
Brimstone Chapter 9: Hidden
Saeris sits with the unconscious Everlayne and accidentally touches one of her quicksilver earrings. The metal turns to liquid on Layne’s skin, and a spirit named Edina takes over her body.
Edina tells Saeris that a small blue book with a butterfly on the cover is hidden in the library and is the only way to stop the rot. She tells Saeris to find it but keep it secret from Kingfisher. Before drifting, she asks Saeris to tell Kingfisher she loved him.
Kingfisher rushes in a moment later and asks why Saeris is calling out his mother’s name, which reveals Edina’s true identity.
Brimstone Chapter 10: Rot
Kingfisher fusses over Saeris before they gather the group in the library. Renfis and Lorreth announce that another thousand warriors have been lost to the rot, and the infection is spreading quickly, turning friends against one another. Kingfisher shares the warning Saeris received from the gods. The decay threatens every realm if they can’t stop it.
The group agrees they need far more silver than Yvelia can provide. Kingfisher and Carrion will travel to the Silver City in Zilvaren to gather silver, bring back Saeris’s brother, and investigate the infected feeders. Saeris will return to Ammontraíeth to find the forge, produce relics, and work on her new magic. Kingfisher hates leaving her behind, but the group agrees it’s the best plan.
Brimstone Chapter 11: Fool’s Paradise
Before Kingfisher and Carrion travel through the quicksilver while Saeris stays behind, she hands over the relics she created, and Kingfisher sets up a shadow gate at Cahlish.
Meanwhile, Saeris trains with Lorreth but feels useless while everyone else works. She figures out Kingfisher asked Lorreth to watch her. Lorreth won’t confirm it but promises to tell her the full story of the Ajun Gate and Ren’s sister, Merelle, over drinks at the Fool’s Paradise.
Lorreth sneaks Saeris out in disguise. At the tavern, the bartender refuses to serve Lorreth because of a six‑century‑old debt. When two vampires try to remove him, Lorreth cuts off one of their hands. Taladaius arrives, reveals he owns the tavern, ends the fight, and pulls Saeris aside for a private conversation.
Brimstone Chapter 12: Tal
Taladaius warns Saeris that the other high bloods may move against her now that Kingfisher has left. Saeris refuses more guards because she doesn’t want to appear vulnerable.
Then Taladaius notices that Saeris is in pain. Vampires can’t lie to their makers, so Saeris admits her Alchemist runes are flaring up. She removes her gloves to show him and explains that Kingfisher’s mother warned the runes were never properly sealed. Taladaius concludes that Edina’s soul remains trapped in their world by sheer determination, and he interprets Saeris’s symptoms as signs of fire magic and regenerative healing.
Taladaius then suggests a public disavowal to sever the maker bond between him and Saeris and keep the other Lords from calling her his puppet. She agrees but asks him to remain as her representative while she’s away. He accepts, and they decide to move forward as friends.
Brimstone Chapter 13: Silver City
Kingfisher and Carrion step out of the quicksilver and come under fire from Madra’s archers. Kingfisher blinds the guards with shadow magic, and they escape through a high window. He tries to conjure a net to break their fall but fails, and they crash through a bread cart. Kingfisher casts a spell to make them appear as ordinary humans.
Carrion tells Kingfisher that robbing Madra’s treasury is pointless since its location is a secret. He leads Kingfisher to an underground vault he co‑owns called the Brigand’s Bank, accessed through a filthy tunnel system beneath the city and several heavily guarded ward walls.
Once they surface, Carrion insists on stopping at a tavern called Kala’s. He hopes to find a vault breaker named Vorath Shah, who knows where Carrion’s partner Eric is, since Eric holds the second key to the vault. When Vorath shows up, he takes one look at Kingfisher and runs. Carrion gives chase, and Kingfisher follows, curious why a stranger would be so terrified of him.
