Shield of Sparrows Chapter 1

Odessa stands at the edge of a cliff, debating whether to jump into the sea. She decides against it. Her father has a meeting with the Turan warriors, and she refuses to be late.

Then Banner, Odessa’s fiancé, arrives on horseback with news. The Guardian has arrived in the city with the other soldiers. For Banner, this is a gut punch. Years ago, the Guardian killed Banner’s brother, and that loss eventually drove his mother to take her own life. Banner suddenly snaps at Odessa, apologizes, and rides off.

On her way home, Odessa thinks about Mae, her half-sister. Once the wedding is over, Mae will be gone for good. Odessa turns back, goes to the cliff’s edge, and jumps.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 2

Odessa slips back into the castle, soaking wet. As she heads upstairs, she nearly collides with a Voster priest, her father’s emissary. The priest unsettles her. He magically draws the water from Odessa’s hair and shapes it into a liquid crown that floats above her head. Odessa bolts.

Back in her room, Margot, Odessa’s stepmother, is waiting and clearly unhappy. She hurries Odessa into formal clothes and dusts powder through her hair to hide its natural red and turn it brown. As she works, Margot explains that the Turan warriors have already killed six sea monsters called marroweels and hauled the carcasses to the docks as proof they can protect the kingdom’s trade routes. This matters because a migration of dangerous creatures known as the crux is expected next spring. Margot then warns Odessa to stay close to her guards.

Margot eventually loses patience with Odessa’s unruly hair and leaves. Odessa finishes getting ready alone and heads to the throne room, already late and expecting trouble.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 3

Odessa slips into the throne room as her father pays five Turan warriors for hunting the marroweels. One warrior argues the agreed amount is no longer enough. Before the king can respond, two Voster priests enter. The more powerful one drifts above the floor, and the Guardian follows. Banner stands at the king’s side, barely holding his fury together.

After introductions, the king presents Mae to Prince Zavier. Zavier looks her over, then shares a silent look with the Guardian. The Guardian speaks for the prince and announces that Zavier will marry Odessa instead, with the wedding that very night as the final reward for killing the monsters.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 4

Chaos breaks out the moment the announcement is made. Margot, Mae, Banner, and the king all refuse to accept it. Odessa accidentally calls the Guardian a jackass out loud. Her father then silences the room.

The king invokes the Shield of Sparrows treaty, arguing he alone decides which daughter is offered to another kingdom. His Voster priest backs him up.

Then the other priest reveals himself as the High Priest. He cites the Chain of Sevens, an ancient rule stating that any warrior who kills seven female creatures of the same species can choose his own bride as a reward. The Guardian clarifies that Zavier killed seven female marroweels, not six.

The king tries to dismiss the claim as legend. The High Priest steps onto the floor, and the temperature drops. Frost creeps up the walls, and the air turns painfully cold. The king backs down. The High Priest declares that Odessa will marry Prince Zavier, satisfying both treaties at once.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 5

After the guests leave, the king asks Brother Dime if there’s any way out of the marriage. Brother Dime tells Odessa this is her fortune, then leaves.

The king clears the room of guards and Banner. Left alone with her family, Mae pulls a knife on Odessa and demands to know what Odessa did to steal the prince’s attention. Their father breaks it up, questions Odessa about her day, accepts her vague answers, and apologizes. He tells her she must go through with the wedding because refusing would legally cost him his life.

Then the king reveals his true motives. He lured the Turans to Roslo to push Prince Zavier into an early marriage. His plan was always to place one of his daughters inside Turah to find Allesaria, the hidden capital, where he believed something could stop the crux migration entirely.

Odessa wasn’t the daughter the king had in mind, but he doesn’t hesitate. He orders Odessa to find Allesaria, learn everything about the Guardian’s powers, and kill him if she gets the chance. He tells Margot to prepare Odessa for the wedding.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 6

Odessa prepares for the wedding and her move to Turah. Margot grows frustrated by the lack of blue dresses, so Odessa settles on her palest gray gown. Once the maids leave, Margot advises Odessa to keep Prince Zavier satisfied so he never suspects she’s there to spy.

Before leaving, Odessa retrieves two items from beneath the closet floorboards: a leather journal and a necklace with a pendant she discovered years ago. She has never figured out what the symbol means, but she tucks the necklace into her dress.

Mae comes in to say goodbye and warns Odessa not to trust any kindness in Turah, insisting Odessa must be hard‑hearted to survive. The sisters hug before their parents enter. The king cuts Odessa’s palm and collects her blood in a vial. Odessa looks out at the ocean one last time, resigned to her new life.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 7

Odessa’s father leads her to the castle’s underground sanctuary for the ceremony. Zavier arrives with his warriors, and the Guardian is the last to enter. The event is brief, mostly the signing of the Shield of Sparrows treaty. As she reads through it, Odessa discovers a deadly condition: if she kills Prince Zavier, she dies too, and the same applies to him. Odessa speaks her vows while the Guardian speaks for Prince Zavier. Both sign in blood, and the High Priest seals the treaty with magic.

The king invites everyone to a feast. Prince Zavier refuses, gives Odessa a quick kiss on the cheek, and walks out with his men. Odessa’s father is furious. The Guardian stops Odessa on her way out, mocks her, and brushes past the king without a word. He then tells Odessa they sail at daybreak.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 8

At daybreak, Odessa reaches the docks after a long night with no food or rest. Her father spent the entire time coaching her on how to spy. None of Odessa’s relatives came to say goodbye. She pauses to look at the seven slain marroweels on display and slices her finger on one of the sharp scales.

The Guardian appears and mocks Odessa about the voyage ahead. Odessa calls the Guardian a murderer. He pushes her toward the vessel. Odessa stumbles, and the Guardian catches her arm but lets go the moment she cries out from an old bruise.

Pausing, the Guardian grabs a lock of Odessa’s hair, catches the scent of the dye, and releases her with a look of disgust. He orders Odessa to get moving. Odessa follows, already imagining throwing the Guardian into the sea.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 9

Odessa is relieved to find her family at the dock. Mae warns Odessa to be wary of the Guardian and admits she knows about their father’s plans for Allesaria. Margot tells Odessa she’s stronger than she realizes. Odessa hopes to say goodbye to her little brother Arthy, but he’s been left at the castle to sleep.

The king speaks to Odessa alone. He apologizes for past failures and mentions Odessa’s mother for the first time in years. Odessa tries to get the king to explain the mission, but he sidesteps the question and walks her to the ship.

As the ship pulls away, Odessa spots Banner on horseback at the top of the cliff. They wave until the coastline disappears.

Zavier approaches Odessa on deck for the first time since they met and tells her to wear more practical clothing in Turah. When he calls her Odessa Wolfe, the new name hits Odessa like a blow. She thrusts her gold crown into Zavier’s hands and walks away without a word.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 10

Odessa wakes after a rough first night tending to her seasick maids. She ignores the practical clothing left in her room and puts on her gray dress. On deck, the Guardian mocks Odessa briefly before diving overboard and swimming at impossible speed to one of the other ships.

Zavier takes the Guardian’s place at the railing. He warns Odessa that the crossing is treacherous and mentions they’ve already lost three ships on the way to Quentis. Zavier admits he hunted the seven marroweels specifically to claim a bride, then tells Odessa about a previous queen who left the kingdom after having her child. Odessa holds onto that as a small hope she might leave Turah one day.

Odessa suspects Zavier is testing her loyalty and keeps his words to herself. When she asks why he chose her over her sister, Zavier goes quiet. Odessa asks if he finds her attractive. Zavier offers a polite compliment and walks away.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 11

Odessa tries on her new Turan clothing and loves the freedom of leather pants and a colorful tunic. Her lady’s maid is visibly shocked, but Odessa is relieved to finally wear something other than gray. The moment sours when the Guardian mocks Odessa on deck and implies Zavier has no interest in sleeping with her. A marroweel then slams into the ship with massive force.

The Guardian takes charge, sends the crew to the harpoons, and orders Odessa and her maid out of the way. The violent rocking throws Odessa over the railing and into the sea. She fights the current as the ship pulls away, but eventually the crew lowers the sails and turns around. The Guardian throws a rope, and Odessa grabs it just as the monster surfaces beneath her. The Guardian waits until the last second to order the men to pull, then hauls Odessa onto the deck and drives a harpoon into the marroweel as it lunges for her.

Once the danger passes, Zavier leaps over from a nearby ship and finds Odessa alive. Zavier and the Guardian exchange a brief, silent look. The Guardian, however, is furious and rounds on Odessa, demanding she follow his orders without question. Odessa refuses and makes it clear she won’t be his puppet. She holds her ground but pauses to thank the Guardian before walking away.

Shield of Sparrows Chapter 12

Odessa goes up to the deck and finds the dead marroweel hanging from the mast. The smell revolts her, and she notices the creature’s blood is dark green. The Guardian explains it’s a male, which is why it’s larger than the others. Odessa asks why the Guardian didn’t jump in to rescue her, but he sidesteps the question. She wonders if he stayed on the ship so he could kill the beast and save her at the same time.

Zavier joins Odessa and the Guardian and mentions his quarters are right next to hers. Odessa demands a sword. Zavier is skeptical, but the Guardian hands over his own heavy blade to test her. He tells Odessa to hold it at his throat and refuses to let her stop. Odessa struggles with the weight but holds still until the Guardian knocks the sword away and turns it on her. Zavier agrees to find Odessa something better suited to her size.

On her way below deck, Odessa overhears Zavier and the Guardian talking. They agree that something unknown is spreading, and Zavier warns that arming Odessa might be a mistake since she clearly wants to kill the Guardian. The Guardian laughs it off. Odessa spends the rest of the day in her room with her maids.
