A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 38
Casteel and Poppy take their positions as the enemy approaches. Emil reports that about two hundred soldiers waited until dark to advance, suggesting vampires are among them. The city has only a hundred and twenty-six defenders. Casteel wants Poppy to stay on the wall with her bow and flee to the caves if he falls. She refuses.
A red carriage marked with the royal seal pulls up to the gate. Duchess Teerman offers to leave the town alone if Casteel hands Poppy over to the Queen. Casteel says no. When the Duchess calls Poppy royal property, Poppy reveals herself and says she’s not an object for anyone to own.
The Duchess tries to manipulate Poppy with shocking claims. Queen Ileana isn’t a vampire, Poppy’s mother was the Queen’s own daughter, and Poppy was chosen as the Maiden because she’s the Queen’s granddaughter. Casteel tells Poppy it’s a psychological tactic, and she doesn’t fall for it.
The Duchess signals the catapults. The soldiers launch the severed heads of the people from New Haven. Poppy watches in horror as the remains hit the ground and recognizes Elijah among them. Everyone who was supposed to be safe is dead.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 39
The battle begins when Casteel jumps from the walls into the enemy ranks. The Guardians follow, their golden swords bursting into flames. The wolven join from hiding while Poppy and the archers fire down from the Rise.
When enemy soldiers break onto the Rise, Poppy kills a guard in the stairwell, takes his sword, and pushes into the open field. The Solis soldiers are avoiding hurting her, and she uses this to her advantage.
Poppy spots a knight cornering a wounded wolven and throws her dagger to take him down. She finds Casteel surrounded and kills a knight about to strike him from behind. They fight together briefly, then race toward the carriage to reach the Duchess.
Before they get there, flaming arrows from the western road strike both sides and set the field on fire. Casteel pulls Poppy under a catapult for cover.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 40
The situation turns desperate when the main enemy army arrives and overwhelms the defenders. Casteel tells Poppy they need to fight their way out. Her empathic powers burst open, and she’s flooded with terror and agony from everyone on the battlefield. She puts her blade to her throat and tells the soldiers she’ll kill herself if they don’t stop. Since they need her alive, they hesitate.
The forest erupts as a massive pack of wolven charges in, followed by the Atlantian army on white horses. Kieran leads the charge, and the reinforcements turn the battle around.
When the fighting ends, Poppy reaches the Duchess’s carriage first. She punches Duchess Teerman and demands the truth about her brother and Malik. The Duchess claims both are alive but says Tawny has been turned into a vampire. The Duchess notices the gold mark on Poppy’s hand, calls her a Princess, and says something cryptic about her heritage. Poppy kills her with
her dagger.
Casteel joins Poppy in the carriage. They argue briefly about her threat, but the tension turns into passion. Poppy tells him she’s already his and isn’t going anywhere.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 41
After the battle, Poppy heals survivors who accept her help. One wounded wolven thanks her but warns that Atlantia didn’t choose her as their leader and that the King has his own plans for her, plans that may not include her survival.
Casteel returns after escorting a young soldier to the border with a message for the Solis monarchs. Atlantia has reclaimed Spessa’s End, and both sides are open to talks about the future of their kingdoms.
He finds Poppy in the bath and shares strange news. Kieran and Jasper both heard Poppy calling for help during the fight, even though she never consciously called out. Casteel admits it sounds nothing like any empath ability he knows of.
Casteel tells Poppy they leave for Atlantia tomorrow for her coronation. Poppy is worried about the King, but Casteel promises no one will hurt her.
Poppy then admits she held something back about the Duchess’s final words. Duchess Teerman said the Queen would be pleased about the marriage and that Poppy had done what the Queen never could by gaining a foothold in Atlantia. Poppy fears some of the Queen’s claims about their family might actually be true.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 42
The group travels east toward Atlantia with a growing number of wolven allies. They reach the Skotos Mountains, hidden behind a fog so thick it looks like the sky has dropped to the earth. Casteel and Kieran explain that it’s divine magic guarding the kingdom’s entrance. Casteel stays close to Poppy and keeps her distracted as they ride through.
On the other side is a forest of gold-leafed Trees of Aios. Casteel splits the group into smaller teams and warns everyone to stay together and not trust anything they see or hear. He stays with Poppy and Kieran for the final stretch.
They make camp when visibility drops. Poppy notices the mist shifts whenever she moves and wonders if the magic is alive. Casteel and Kieran dismiss it.
The three of them sleep side by side to stay warm. When Poppy wakes, she’s curled against Casteel with Kieran at her back. She stays still so she won’t wake them. Just as she drifts off again, a quiet voice whispers her name in the dark.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 43
Poppy wakes from a dream set on the night of the Craven attack. Her father tells her to look after her mother, and she spots a cloaked figure she believes holds the truth about what happened.
Still in a daze, Poppy follows the figure through the fog and nearly walks off a cliff. A woman appears and stops her, telling her to go home, where she’ll find the answers she wants. Casteel and Kieran grab Poppy just as the ground shakes. Kieran believes the woman was the goddess Aios.
The group reunites at Gold Rock. Casteel apologizes and admits the mist affected his mind too. He’s stunned that a goddess woke just to save Poppy and thinks it might convince his parents and people to trust her.
They reach the white Pillars of Atlantia, and Casteel tells Poppy she’s finally home.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 44
The group reaches Saion’s Cove, and Poppy is stunned by the city. Before they can settle, Alastir meets them with a warning. The King and Queen have already arrived after hearing about the battle. Alastir notices their wedding rings and asks to speak with Casteel privately. Poppy goes with Beckett to see the Chambers of Nyktos.
At the temple, Poppy realizes Beckett has slipped away. Armed strangers corner her, call her a Soul Eater, and accuse her of being a spy. Beckett led her into an ambush.
They throw rocks from a distance, believing her powers only work through touch. She falls to her knees, bleeding from a head wound. The pain and betrayal break her composure. The sky turns black, lightning flashes, and blood begins to rain down.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 45
When one of the attackers tries to stab Poppy, something breaks open inside her. She pulls in the hate and anger through silver tethers and sends it back. The weight of their own emotions kills every one of them.
A giant tree with red leaves grows instantly from where Poppy’s blood touched the ground, identical to the trees in the Blood Forest. Dozens of wolven form a circle around Poppy. Jasper stands at the front and blocks Casteel when he tries to reach her.
Casteel gets through with his parents, King Valyn and Queen Eloana. The Queen demands to know what her son has brought into the kingdom.
Dropping to one knee, Casteel crosses his swords over his chest. The wolven bow. The Queen then removes her crown, leaves it at the feet of the statue of Nyktos, and kneels before Poppy. She tells the crowd to recognize their new ruler. She declares that Poppy is the last living descendant of the ancient gods.
