This chapter-by-chapter summary of A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout contains spoilers.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 26

Kieran stays in the room while Casteel feeds from Poppy to monitor her heart rate. The feeding quickly turns into something more than survival, and the tension builds until Kieran has to step in and tell Casteel to stop.

Once they’re alone, Casteel turns his full attention to Poppy’s needs. What follows is intense and deeply personal. Afterward, he admits he lost control, something that has never happened before, and explains that he wanted the focus to stay on her rather than his own desires.

Casteel cleans up and asks if he can stay and hold Poppy. He knows their night together doesn’t change the terms of their bargain, but he asks if they can pretend it does, just for a little while. Poppy agrees and lets herself enjoy the moment.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 27

After a few minutes, Poppy and Cas reach the bustling Atlantian settlement. Poppy is instantly captivated by its vibrancy and life.

Poppy throws on one of Casteel’s tunics, and they head out. Casteel proposes they spend the afternoon as just Hawke and Poppy, no talk of the past or the future. Poppy agrees, and they share a kiss before heading to the stables.

There, they meet an older wolven named Coulton, who feels a strange electric sensation when he shakes Poppy’s hand. She reads his intentions and finds he’s genuinely bewildered rather than angry. Casteel then gets her settled on a calm mare named Molly and stays close as they set off.

Along the way, they pass a group of elite female warriors known as the Guardians. They take down several men with ease. Poppy is amazed, having grown up somewhere where women were never allowed to touch a weapon.

Casteel opens up about his time in captivity. The Ascended forced him to feed on humans with Atlantian blood, many of them very young. Poppy listens and privately wonders whether his brother Malik is even still alive.

When they reach town, the people clearly adore Casteel. He knows many by name and treats everyone with warmth. The townspeople eye Poppy with suspicion and keep their distance. She ignores it and spends the rest of the day pretending she’s exactly where she belongs.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 28

Casteel takes Poppy to visit Kieran’s sister Vonetta. She’s warm and welcoming, and the group spends the afternoon sharing a meal and talking. Casteel stays close to Poppy the whole time, his small, constant touches making it hard for her to keep their arrangement in mind.

The conversation turns to the strange electric feeling people get when they touch Poppy. Vonetta and Kieran say Poppy has a unique scent that feels ancient to them. Casteel disagrees, says she smells like honeydew, and adds that her blood is far more potent than he would expect given her background.

The afternoon ends abruptly when a roof collapses on Beckett and breaks both his back legs. He needs to shift into his human form right away or his bones will set incorrectly, but the pain is too overwhelming for him to focus.

Poppy steps in to take his pain away. Her hands begin to glow, and the light spreads until it covers her entire body. Everyone is stunned. Alastir goes pale and looks particularly disturbed. Casteel has to tell Poppy she’s glowing from head to toe.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 29

Beckett can use his legs again after Poppy steps in. She didn’t just take away the pain. She fully healed his broken bones. The people watching feel a mix of wonder and terror, and Poppy picks up on all of it through her gift.

Later, Casteel explains that a wolven only has a few minutes to shift after a serious injury before the damage becomes permanent. Beckett was nearly at that point. He also tells Poppy that she was literally glowing while she healed him, something none of them have ever seen.

Casteel asks Poppy to keep her powers quiet until they have more answers. Poppy says she can’t ignore people who are suffering but agrees to be more discreet in front of others.

On the way back, Casteel brings up their marriage. He had planned to wait until they reached Atlantia, but the incident with Beckett changed his mind. Casteel worries the fear surrounding the Soul Eater legends could put Poppy in danger and wants to marry her before anyone acts on it. He also wants to wed before meeting his parents, who he expects will try to delay things.

A wolven elder named Jasper arrives tomorrow to lead the ceremony, meaning they could be married by the following night. Poppy can tell Casteel is more worried than he lets on, but she agrees to marry him there in Spessa’s End.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 30

Alastir argues they shouldn’t marry without the King and Queen’s permission, but Casteel and Poppy ignore him. Casteel accidentally lets slip that his parents will eventually care for Poppy as much as he does, a comment that surprises them both.

Once Alastir leaves, Poppy tells Casteel she can now sense other people’s emotions just by looking at them, without any effort.

Casteel takes Poppy out on horseback and shows her the surrounding land. They ride past a field of red flowers used for medicine and guarded in secret, then he leads her to a hidden cave covered in purple flowers with a natural hot spring inside.

They bathe together, and the mood turns intimate. Casteel suggests they keep pretending none of it means anything. Poppy stops him and says she’s done with the games and wants their relationship to be real.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 31

Poppy and Casteel follow through on their feelings in the hot spring. Afterward, Kieran shows up with a change of clothes. Poppy asks if Casteel is still taking the herb that prevents pregnancy, and he confirms he is.

That evening, they attend a communal dinner. The crowd is openly hostile toward Poppy, and she can feel their anger without trying. Alastir sits next to her and mentions that the town used to be a massive trading center before the fall of Atlantia. Beckett comes by to serve drinks and thanks Poppy, but she picks up a sharp spike of fear from him.

The night takes a turn when Alastir mentions that Casteel was expected to marry someone else upon returning home. When they ask him, he reveals that Casteel was already promised to another woman before Poppy was ever part of the picture.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 32

Poppy demands answers from Casteel in front of the whole room. Casteel claims he never swore an oath to marry the other woman, but Alastir points out the entire kingdom expected it. A man named Dante questions Poppy’s loyalties. She tells the room what she endured as the Maiden, and Casteel admits that while he planned to use her, he fell for her. Jasper accepts this, and the room settles.

Poppy steps outside, and Casteel follows to apologize. She isn’t ready to talk, and Jasper pulls him away. Kieran walks Poppy back and shares some history about the long lives of the wolven.

Alone, Poppy notices her door was never locked. She breaks down, understanding for the first time that she’s free. She admits she loves Casteel despite his secrets and decides to keep moving forward because the mission is bigger than her feelings.

Poppy falls asleep but wakes when Casteel slips in and stops her from grabbing her weapon. He teases her about whether she plans to stab him again.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 33

Casteel uses a key to enter Poppy’s room, and they start arguing. Poppy tells him to go and find comfort with Gianna, which stops him cold.

The fight turns into a deeper discussion about his secrets. Casteel claims he never agreed to marry Gianna and that his father made the decision without him. Poppy says the issue isn’t just one woman. It’s that he constantly keeps her in the dark. She wants to know why he won’t take the throne, why he hid things about the Joining and Spessa’s End, and why he never mentioned the woman he once loved.

Casteel says he came to find out if she meant what she said at dinner, whether he was truly the first thing she ever chose for herself. When she doesn’t answer, he assumes she’s shutting him out.

The argument turns into total honesty. Casteel admits his plans to use Poppy fell apart once he got to know her. Being with her lets him forget his brother and his responsibilities, and he never felt that way with Shea. He starts to say more, but Emil knocks on the door with an emergency. The sky appears to be on fire.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 34

Poppy and Casteel agree they still have a lot to discuss, but the emergency comes first. They follow Emil up to the Rise and see the orange glow is a massive fire on the ground about a day’s journey away. Casteel orders Nova to keep the town calm and waits for word from Delano and Dante.

While they wait, Jasper finds Poppy and speaks candidly. He says the wolven never pushed for a marriage between their lines and implies the King was manipulated into the idea. He also notes that her ability to heal and her silver radiance aren’t traits of any empath he has known, which leaves Poppy questioning her heritage.

Casteel and Poppy share a quiet moment at sunrise. Poppy mentions her future role as Princess, which clearly moves Casteel. He also reveals that Gianna is a member of Alastir’s family.

The scouts return, but Delano arrives alone, covered in blood and unconscious. Poppy heals him in front of the crowd, and her body glows again. When he wakes, Delano warns that an attack from the Ascended is coming.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 35

Delano reports that the Ascended are destroying everything west of the city. Pompay and the nearby woods are gone, Dante was killed during the retreat, and the enemy could arrive as early as tonight.

Casteel moves quickly. He sends Alastir across the mountains for reinforcements and orders Kieran to go with him. Kieran hates leaving before a battle, but accepts it. Casteel tries to get Poppy to leave, but she refuses. He lets her stay, knowing she’s a skilled fighter and healer. Before he goes, Kieran asks Poppy to watch over Casteel.

Poppy trains with Vonetta and joins the strategy meeting. That night, she falls asleep and wakes to find Casteel beside her.

They finally finish the conversation they have been putting off. Casteel admits his feelings are real despite how things began. He also tells Poppy the truth about Shea. Shea gave up Malik to the Ascended to save herself, and Casteel killed her for it. Only Kieran and Malik know. Alastir still believes his daughter died a hero, and Casteel wants to keep it that way. Poppy tells him that everything she said about him at dinner was the truth.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 36

Poppy admits she fell for Casteel when he was still Hawke, and her feelings only grew after she learned the truth. She’s terrified because he has the power to break her heart. Casteel drops to his knees and vows to protect her heart for the rest of his life. He asks her to read his emotions, and she finally feels the love he has for her. They agree to stop playing games and take things one day at a time. Casteel asks her to marry him, and Poppy says yes.

Vonetta arrives with a red dress and a diamond necklace. Red is the traditional color for Atlantian brides because it wards off evil spirits. The wedding will be outside, both of them barefoot on the soil of the kingdom during their vows. Jasper will lead the ceremony and keep it brief.

Before they head out, Poppy puts on the dagger Vikter gave her so she can feel like he’s there with her. When Vonetta says it’s time, they leave together.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire Chapter 37

The wedding takes place in the courtyard, Poppy and Casteel barefoot in the dirt. Jasper leads the short ceremony. Poppy and Casteel place their rings on the ground, cover them with soil, and Jasper cuts their palms with a gold blade. Poppy and Casteel’s blood drips onto the rings, the wounds heal, and a gold mark appears across both their hands.

The sky goes pitch black the moment they’re declared married. Jasper says Nyktos approves of their union and that nothing like it has appeared since Casteel’s parents wed.

Back in their room, Casteel explains the gold marks and tells Poppy the legend of heartmates. The concept began when ancient gods fell in love with humans, producing the first Atlantians. He also explains how Malec and Isbeth fit into that history.

Casteel mentions a wedding tradition of sharing blood as a sign of complete trust. Poppy agrees. They exchange blood for the first time and fall asleep, but wake hours later to a signal from the guards. The Ascended have reached the city.
