Every fifty years, the gates between them open, and fifty challengers are allowed to journey across Starside on a deadly quest to access a pool of magic that can heal, grant wealth, or extend life. Everyone has their reasons for entering, but Aris has only vengeance. As a child, a goddess set fire to her village, killing her family. Aris isn’t after the gods’ magic—she’s going to kill them.
First, she must survive the Culling, the king’s deadly competition to choose his fifty challengers. An orphaned blacksmith’s apprentice, Aris doesn’t have the superior weapons of the heirs from the Great Houses. But the greatest swords—ones that contain power—are not inherited or bought, they are claimed, by both sides. And when Aris claims a great sword, it makes her not just a real competitor—but a target.
Getting past the gates is only the beginning. Starside is deadlier than it seems. If the ancient creatures, magic-wielding beasts, and bloodthirsty immortals weren’t dangerous enough, a new peril has even immortals fearing what rises from the ground at night. With a blade most would kill to claim, Aris can’t trust anyone. Especially not Harlan Raker, the merciless and mysterious king’s guard who betrayed her years ago—and who may now be the key to her survival.
But Aris is hiding a secret tied to her family’s death. And when it’s revealed, not even the gods will be able to stop what’s coming…

Starside Book Summary
This Alex Aster Starside chapter summary contains spoilers.
Starside Chapter 1
Aris moves through the packed crowd with a dagger hidden in her sleeve, determined to reach the black stone platform at the village center. The platform serves as the entry point to the Questral, a deadly competition held every fifty years. During it, fifty challengers cross into Starside, the immortal realm, to claim a chalice brimming with magic powerful enough to heal, transform, or grant immortality.
A silver hawk screams to start a ten‑minute countdown, and the crowd erupts. The challengers surge toward the platform while the king’s guards cut most of them down.
When one guard raises his sword to kill a young boy, Aris leaps in front of the blow. Her Starside‑steel dagger smashes the guard’s silver blade on contact. She cuts through several more challengers until the crowd retreats, sobered by the strength of her weapon. She also severs the hands of the man who groped her earlier.
Aris reaches the platform with three minutes to spare and meets a girl named Kira. Just before the countdown ends, the feared knight Harlan Raker steps onto the platform unchallenged, carrying a full sword forged from Starside steel.
The Watchman asks each of the 226 survivors if they agree to enter the Culling. Aris answers yes, even as her mentor Stellan watches from the crowd and silently begs her not to. Her final thought reveals her true reason for standing there: she’s going to Starside to kill the gods.
Starside Chapter 2
After reaching the platform, Aris slips away to a ruined hill temple where she’s stashed her pack. She heads home and finds Stellan waiting. They argue for hours about her decision, but she refuses to change her mind. When she asks what he knows about Starside, he doesn’t answer and quietly lifts the Starside dagger from her pocket.
Aris goes back out and meets Kira and another challenger named Zane. They talk briefly before Aris heads home.
Inside, Aris finds Stellan badly wounded on the floor. She quickly realizes that a challenger who saw her use the dagger must have come for it. As Stellan fades, he tells her to find someone named Vander Evren, then begs her to end his life before someone else can. She can’t bring herself to do it, and he dies in her arms.
Through the night, Aris stays with Stellan’s body. At dawn, the Watchman’s cart arrives to collect the challengers. Aris boards it and watches her village disappear behind her.
Starside Chapter 3
Aris, Kira, and Zane share a cart heading east toward the king’s castle. Their food and water run out quickly while Cadoc Bolter’s group eats and drinks freely in the cart ahead. Along the way, Zane lets slip that he’s from House Sterling, one of the most powerful families on Stormside, and neither Aris nor Kira can understand why someone with his resources would enter the Questral.
The carts pass through a village where locals line the road with food, water, and letters for the gods. Aris and the others take what they can. One man in their cart mocks the villagers and tosses the letters over the side, sparking a tense exchange with Kira.
That night, the cart rolls over several bodies. The Culling hasn’t officially started, but Aris suspects challengers are already killing each other in the dark.
At the next morning’s rest stop, the carts vanish, and only 150 horses wait on a nearby hill. The Watchman announces that ten challengers died on the road, leaving 216, and says there aren’t enough horses for all of them. He declares the Culling has begun.
Starside Chapter 4
The moment the Watchman declares the Culling has begun, the challengers scatter. Some run for the horses while others stay back to fight. Archers in the trees shoot down nearly everyone who runs, so Aris stays and fights.
Pagnus Ender and the other Ender heirs tear through the forest with a Starside‑steel chain, cutting down trees and people alike. Kira pulls Aris out of its path just in time. With most of the archers down, the two run for the horses.
On the way, the hostile man from the cart attacks Aris and Kira. Aris fights him off, and he retreats, threatening to come back for her blade. She and Kira race up the hill and throw themselves onto the last two unclaimed horses just before other challengers reach them.
Aris then spots Raker at the forest’s edge without a horse. He suddenly hurls his sword through the air, drives it through the cart man, and the blade flies back into his hand. Raker takes the dead man’s horse. It’s the first time Aris has seen a weapon with active magic, and it shakes her.
Starside Chapter 5
The surviving challengers arrive at the king’s castle, where killing is forbidden. They’re given rooms and time to clean up before a feast.
At the feast, the king offers each challenger a silver sword in exchange for an oath to hand over half of any magic they bring back. Nearly everyone accepts. Aris refuses, with no intention of returning and no interest in making oaths to a king she already distrusts.
When the king singles Aris out and questions her, she holds her ground and he moves on. He then reveals the next stage of the Culling. At sunrise, the remaining challengers will race to the gates, and the first fifty through will earn a place in the Questral.
That night, Aris slips out of her room to explore the castle. She finds nothing useful but overhears a private exchange between the king and Raker. The king asks if Raker has what he needs and confirms his orders. Raker says he won’t return without it. Before Aris can hear more, they leave.
On her way back, Aris rounds a corner and walks straight into Raker.
Starside Chapter 6
Despite her fear, Aris holds her ground, and she and Raker trade threats before he walks away. Back in her room, Aris feels the encounter stir memories of a past confrontation with him, which she forces down.
Aris gets a few hours of sleep before the Watchman knocks to signal it’s time. She wakes Kira, and the two acknowledge without much sentiment that they may have to kill each other before the day is done. Aris understands. Kira would do anything to save her sick sister, just as Aris would’ve done for hers.
Outside, the challengers collect their weapons. None of the guards can lift Raker’s sword, so he simply opens his hand, and it flies into his grip.
Aris looks out at the terrain ahead. The path to the gates is mostly flat and open, with little cover against the archers. Since this part of the competition is a race and not a fight, Aris sheathes her blade. The king watches from a high balcony as the Watchman gives the signal and the final stage of the Culling begins.
Starside Chapter 7
The final stage sends Aris toward the gates on foot with no armor and arrows flying. One strikes her in the back, but her titanium sword, strapped to her spine, absorbs the impact and saves her life.
Ahead lies a thorn maze with razor‑sharp walls and shifting paths. Aris spots Raker moving through and follows him. He cuts down anyone in his way and clearly knows where he’s going. He realizes she’s trailing him but dismisses her as no real threat and lets her follow him out.
Beyond the maze lies a graveyard forest, its trees tangled with old swords pushed up from the graves below. Challengers reach for them, trying to bond one to themselves. Valen claims one, and so does Kira.
Before Aris can try, Cadoc corners her. His ally drops her with a thrown rock, and Cadoc closes in holding Stellan’s dagger, implying he’s the one who killed him. He then breaks her titanium sword with his silver one, leaving her with nothing.
Surrounded, with Cadoc’s blade at her throat, Aris reaches for the trees in a last desperate attempt. Nothing responds. Then a sword bursts up through the grave beneath her and drives itself into her open hand, blocking Cadoc’s strike and destroying his blade.
Starside Chapter 8
The sight of Aris holding the ancient sword stuns everyone, including Raker. Before the other challengers can close in, a stampede of huge horned creatures tears through the forest and scatters them. Aris climbs a tree and waits while challengers die below.
Aris runs for the gates. The bridge is packed, and the drop on either side is massive. When the gates swing open, the force shakes the bridge and knocks people over the edge. Then enormous blind creatures pour through from the other side and tear into the crowd.
One targets Aris. She waits until the last second and tilts her sword so the creature’s momentum drives it onto the blade. Soaked in its blood, she works out that the creatures hunt by smell. She finds Kira on the bridge, covers her in blood too, and the beasts veer away.
With the last few spots filling fast, Aris, Kira, and Zane push for the gates. At the threshold, one of Cadoc’s allies grabs Aris by the braid and drags her down to take her spot. Zane, already through with Kira, turns and shoves the man off the bridge, pulls Aris up, and all three walk through together.
Starside Chapter 9
The group steps through the gates into Starside. Zane explains they have fifty days, with the gates reopening at sunrise and closing at sunset. He also produces a partial map showing one route to the Land of the Gods. At a nearby pool where they wash off the blood, an immortal named Pelas warns them that night is dangerous even for his kind. He offers shelter at the building beside the Tower of Knowledge, and they follow him.
A senior scholar named Ellis welcomes the group and has food brought out. The scholars spend the evening firing questions about life on the other side. Aris stays up with Pelas, feeds his ego until he takes her inside the tower to show off, and lifts his quill, which doubles as a key.
Once everyone is asleep, Aris slips back inside and works up the shelves level by level. On Level 6, she finds a journal titled A Quest of Life and Death with a hand‑drawn map of all of Starside, far more detailed than Zane’s. Before she can read more, she overhears Pelas telling another scholar he intends to keep the three of them alive long enough to dissect them.
Aris tears out the map and tries to leave. Scholars block her path, so she drags her sword along the shelves and ruptures the magic in the books, throwing the tower into chaos. She finds Kira and Zane, and they run for the front door, where Ellis waits with a weapon. He lowers it when he sees Aris’s sword and steps aside. As Aris backs out, he catches a glimpse of silver on her wrist where her sleeve has ridden up. He says nothing, and his lack of surprise is the most unsettling part.
